Modern Foreign Languages

Vision

Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.  Our enriched environment for learning provides us the opportunity to learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. We have always fostered a curiosity for languages and encourage children to share their language knowledge.

At The Hyde we are passionate about promoting the love of learning languages. Exploring the Spanish language and the languages we speak at home to deepen our understanding and to broaden our knowledge. We have chosen the Spanish language to lay the foundations of language learning in preparation for KS3 and the outside world.  We believe that the teaching we provide offers children an extremely valuable educational, cultural and social experience. We will develop communication skills including key skills of speaking and listening and extend their knowledge of how language works.

How we do MFL at The Hyde

Spanish is taught as PPA cover in Year 2 and Key Stage 2 . We also teach a 15 minute a week Spanish recap in class. We have a native Spanish speaking teacher teaching the language. As a whole school we are dripping vocabulary into our school day. For example in the playground we have colour and number splat games.

Through the online learning platform  'Languagenut', children will develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in another language, with our chosen language being Spanish.  Children will be taught patterns in sounds through song, games and rhyme. They will listen attentively and show their understanding by joining in and responding. As a school we all share a love of reading familiar key texts, therefore sharing these with the children will allow them to learn new language from previously taught stories.

How we deliver the curriculum

All children will start from ‘year 1’ of Spanish language learning where they will cover a wide range of vocabulary. Children will be taught following the scheme of work from the Languagenut online platform taught by a native Spanish speaker. Children will be encouraged to link their vocabulary knowledge together to start to build sentences. Oral rehearsal will be at the forefront of our language learning. Children will be encouraged to continue their language learning around the school through playground signs, word of the week, register responding and Spanish day. Each class will also have a 15 minute Spanish vocabulary session a week to continue to promote the use of the Spanish language.

We also have a range of Spanish texts and dual language texts for the children to access independently in our school library. MFL day is an organised day of language learning for the whole school. Outside providers support our language learning for example Flamenco dancers and Spanish musicians.
