Literacy

Vision

At the Hyde School we believe that a quality Literacy curriculum should develop children’s love of speaking, listening, reading and writing in a creative broad and balanced curriculum. It should inspire an appreciation of our rich and varied literacy heritage and promote high standards of language and communication, developing vocabulary progression across all key stages and all subjects.

How we do Literacy at The Hyde

We value our children's interests and listen to their voices to shape our Literacy curriculum. This gives us flexibility in our teaching methods to plan and provide engaging lessons, whereby children are actively learning in a variety of exciting ways. We support children’s progress by providing positive feedback and clear next steps to support their development. We understand that children have many different learning styles and careful planning ensures that all of their needs are met so that they achieve success.

How we deliver the curriculum

At The Hyde we follow the National Curriculum and model high standards of language and literacy by equipping children with a strong command of the spoken and written word, based on an urban rich curriculum, quality texts which appropriately challenge stereotypes and first-hand experiences. We aim to promote a positive attitude to Literacy and develop a life-long love of language and communication by learning about literacy skills and progression of skills through high quality teaching, modelling and scaffolding at every opportunity.

We follow the Little Wandle phonics programme to teach our children to read. We aim to grow confident readers who love to read for pleasure.
