📚 Library Helpers

Each semester, 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to apply to become a Library Helper! Library Helpers assist the librarian during their weekly recess visit and play an important role in keeping our library organized, welcoming, and ready for our school community.

What Does a Library Helper Do?

Library Helpers visit the library once a week during recess to assist with a variety of library tasks, including:

• 📚 Emptying book return bins

• 🔄 Checking books back into the library

• 📖 Reshelving books

• 🗂️ Organizing library materials

• 📦 Processing new library books

• 🤝 Assisting with the checkout process when their classes visit the library

Helpers are also expected to be responsible for remembering their assigned library day and reporting to the library during their scheduled recess.

What Makes a Great Library Helper?

Library Helpers are leaders in our school community. They are expected to model CREST and demonstrate responsibility, kindness, and respect during their library visits and while working with others.

Library Helper positions are highly sought-after and have very limited availability. Students are selected each semester based on a variety of factors, including:

• Their application

• Their previous behavior and participation in the library

• The current needs of the library program

• The goal of providing opportunities as equitably as possible

Because there are many students interested in serving as Library Helpers and only a limited number of positions available, being a Library Helper in one semester does not guarantee that a student will be selected again in a future semester.

We are grateful to all of our students who apply and want to contribute to their school library. Whether or not a student is selected, there are many ways to be a library leader by caring for our shared space, treating others with kindness, and being a responsible member of our library community.
