Fun at Burnet Elementary!

With Communities in Schools, TFIU was lucky enough to get to spend 2 whole days with Burnet Elementary students!

Wednesday, 2/22/23, Phylicia and Shanice talked with students about positive affirmations and loving oneself so we can advocate for ourselves! Students created their own happiness page by coloring or writing out what makes them happy and competed in Positive Affirmation Relays. It was wonderful seeing how the different ways Burnet students talk about how they love themselves and what makes them happy!

Thursday, was a Living History Museum were students learned from local professionals about their work and the Black leaders before them in their field! Doctors, nurses, mental health professionals, insurance agents, and more laughed and learned with Burnet!

Become a TFIU Advocate

We are community led and driven and need YOU to make community change in Galveston!

There are multiple ways you can get involved and work directly with US in making Galveston a community for ALL.

What is implicit bias?

One believed reason that black students are treated differently in school is due to implicit bias.

We all have biases, they develop because of our environment, experiences, and what we are exposed to. However, it is important for us to understand what our biases are, and why, so that we can change how we treat and perceive others.

Healthy Snack Booth at Central Middle School

The Future is US, Central PTO, and Galveston's Own Farmer's Market's Real Food Project are continuing to provide healthy and free snacks to Central Middle School students the 2nd Thursday of every month.

Want to get in on the fun? Join US and sign up here  to volunteer in baking goods, purchasing snacks, or helping us distribute them to the hungry students!

Nia Cultural Center's Harambee

Harambee means let's all pull together.

The way Harambee for Galveston's Youngest Citizens plans on pulling together is through our new program designed to assist families with Black Galveston's children ages 0 to 3 by paying parents, grandparents, and guardians $30/hour to enroll and participate in our community's children's brain development support classes. Participants then give feedback on their experience through shared decision making on how we can increase appeal and cultural relevance in these classes. Local data shows that Galveston's black children consistently experience disadvantages when it comes to health and education. Through this program we will pull together alongside our parents, guardians, and partners to bring better access for local resources.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Black Alliance for Peace Supports National Day of Action Against Police Terror

Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) member organization Community Movement Builders (CMB) is calling all organizations, organizers and community members to a National Day of Action Against Police Terror on March 9, 2023.

In the wake of the brutal killings of Tyre Nichols and forest defender Manuel Tortuguita, the city of Atlanta is going full steam ahead to build what activists have dubbed “Cop City.” Atlanta officials have proposed a $90 million complex be built on 85 acres of a forest. This would only arm and deploy more police—whom we refer to as the domestic army—in African and colonized working-class and poor communities.

CMB has been at the forefront of efforts to defeat Cop City. CMB’s analysis suggests placing Cop City in the heart of a still-majority African city is an insidious reminder of the collaborative nature of the “Black misleadership class” that serves the white capitalist minority. It also makes clear this minority is preparing for the massive use of physical, repressive power to maintain control of its internal colonies.

Cop City has been ostensibly framed as a neutral tool for fighting crime. But there is no neutrality when confronted with the asymmetrical power of the settler-colonial state in relation to poor and working-class communities. In that relationship of power, the police are instruments of control and containment, with Cop City being a part of the growing infrastructure for increased police terror in the United States, as well as in the U.S. state of Georgia and in the city of Atlanta.

For CMB, as well as for all of BAP’s member organizations and individual members, Cop City is part of the effort by city, state and federal governments to militarize the lives of African and poor people in the United States and around the world. This local, national and international military-police structure wages war in Ukraine, sends U.S. and NATO troops to Africa, advocates military intervention in Haiti, sanctions progressive governments in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and threatens humankind with nuclear annihilation.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD!

Join us in the fight against police terror.

#StopCopCity, end the 1033 Program and end U.S. sanctions against progressive governments.

TFIU School Board Watch Doc!

The Future is Us’ critical goal is to effectuate policy change in GISD, so that black students, and ultimately, all children receive a quality education. However, institutional power can be adversarial at times. Therefore, it is compulsory to us as parents, youth, and Galveston community members to hold our local institutions and Board of Trustees accountable.

Through a collaborative effort, TFIU created and is making available our The Future is US SCHOOL BOARD WATCH Document. With this self-explanatory document, any interested community member can attend or watch a school board meeting, and record detailed notes and minutes, as well as assess, in real time, the quality of content in the meeting.

Once completed, please e-mail the document to info@thefutureisus.co. We will compile the information so that we can become better equipped and more effective in our advocacy for positive change and creating better GISD schools.

Thank you all in advance for your support and dedication to making sure all of Galveston’s students get the best education possible!
