At Birch this winter and spring, we continued our study of the 19th century. One of the more interesting topics in the early 1800's is the American expansion into the Louisiana Purchase. Students worked on teams to complete webquests on subjects of their choice from among the Mountain Men and Women who explored the Rocky Mountains and the Old West.

Another key topic in the history of the 19th century is the Civil War. We studied the causes of the Civil War and the economics of enslavement. We looked Abolitionism and especially at the agency of Black people in the movement for the Abolition of slavery. Class debated the necessity of violence to achieve emancipation. Students completed a webquest on Civil War subjects they were especially interested in.
