This year in photography class, we learned about the history of photography and its inventors: Niépce and Daguerre from France and Talbot from England. France and England both claim they invented photography first. Then, we built a camera obscura in the staircase down to the basement. We also built our own pinhole cameras and made prints on silver gelatin paper in the darkroom. Lastly we made cyanotype contact prints, a kind of camara-less photography.
CAMERA OBSCURA
PINHOLE CAMERAS
Some students built cameras with Legos. Others used oatmeal and cardboard boxes.
Making an exposure.
Our first exposures were a process of trial and error. Students repaired light leaks on their cameras and tested exposure times.
