2021 TGS Boys 1st XI vs TGS Alumni

(09/02/2021)
After reintroducing the traditional fixture in 2020, the Alumni match was once again played in great spirit in 2021.
This year, we had the pleasure of having former NZ international Beverley Brentnall conduct the toss. Bev has the great honour of being the first women to captain NZ in a One Day International, and to have played in the first-ever Cricket World Cup.
The match was a closely fought encounter, with the Alumni posting 139 off their 20 overs largely due to a superb opening partnership between former Blackcap Richard Jones (36) and current NSCC Premier player Sam Hinds (48).
In reply, the 1st XI started strongly, reaching 70-2 off 10 overs. Hayden McKay (39), Adam Little (18) and Jack Clough (22) were the key players in this fast start.
However, the Old Boys fought back, with a spectacular diving catch from Paul Hitchcock to remove Adam the highlight. Some cameos down the order from the likes of Christian Scott (16) kept the 1st XI in the match but ultimately fell short on 131 runs off 20 overs.

Two TGS Cricketers Selected for Auckland Cricket Development Camps

(03/02/2021)
Congratulations to Max Clarke and Maia Scott for recently being named in development squads for their respective age groups.
Max was selected into the Auckland U17 squad after a strong showing in 2020 for the 1st XI and at the recent Auckland U17 District Tournament for North Harbour.
Maia, who is a member of the Girls 1st XI and played for North Harbour U19 in the Auckland U19 District Tournament was selected for the Auckland U19 Development Camp. Just 6 weeks too old for U15 cricket, Maia's selection into the U19 camp is a great achievement for someone her age.

Representative Success for TGS's Female Cricketers

(18/12/2020)
Takapuna Grammar had 7 cricketers represent North Harbour in representative teams throughout December.
Anna Browning and Maia Scott were in the North Harbour U19 side, while Issy Smith, Izzy Fox, Rishika Jaswal, Olivia Priddy and Scout Hallman were a part of the North Harbour U15 team that won their tournament. Further congratulations to Rishika Jaswal for winning overall MVP of the U15 tournament.
Following these district tournaments, Anna Browning was named in the Auckland U19 side to play the National U19 Tournament in Lincoln. This was played in January 2021, with Anna also teaming up with recent Alumni Sam Petherick and Emily Handyside to take out the National Championship.

New Indoor Facility Under Construction

Cricket at Takapuna Grammar School will be getting a huge boost by the construction of a new indoor facility this year.
Concrete has now been laid and the site is progressing well, generating much interest for cricket loving staff and students at school.
We are looking forward to seeing the facility take shape over the next few weeks!

Girls 1st XI are Auckland Champions!

Huge congratulations to the Girls 1st XI who have been named Auckland Champions for 2020.
Although the season was shorter than anticipated, the girls put together a number of strong performances to finish as competition winners.
They will represent Auckland at the National Secondary School Championships later this year. This is the first time any cricket team from Takapuna Grammar School has qualified for a National Tournament.
Fantastic job to everyone involved!

Impressive Results from Colts 1

The first half of the season has seen some great individual and team performances for our Colts 1 team. Just one point off Auckland Grammar, the boys will go in to Term 4 in 2nd place after winning 4 of their 5 games.
Very strong batting performances, particularly from Hamish Jardine and Scott Beaumont mean they are first and second in the batting charts respectively. Further congratulations to Scott for scoring his maiden century against Kings College, a massive 129 runs.
On the bowling front, Conor Langdon has picked up regular wickets to lead the grade including one game where he finished with figures of 5/9. Sol Vermeer is not far behind as well, sitting 3rd in the bowling charts.

Return of the Annual Alumni Match!

For many years the annual ex-pupils match was a regular event on the cricketing calendar at Takapuna Grammar School, so it is fantastic to see the traditional fixture back in 2020.
Batting first the Alumni XI scored quickly from the start, eventually posting 177 runs in their 20 overs. In reply, the TGS 1st XI had a promising start only to lose several quick wickets in the middle overs to fall short of the target with a score of 130.
The game was played in good spirit and it was great to see so many current and former students in attendance. Special mention must go to Bill Crump who oversaw the toss. Wearing his whites from his own playing days, Bill played in the 1949 ex-pupils match after leaving TGS in 1945.
Overall, a fantastic day and a tradition that we hope will continue long into the future.

Auckland Cricket U17 Selection

On the back of some very strong performances at the Boys U17 District Tournament, Hayden McKay was named in the Auckland Cricket Boys U17 Team that played in the National U17 Tournament at the beginning of January down in Lincoln.
On top of that, Emily Handyside and Ruby Worrall were also named in the Auckland Cricket Girls U17 Team that played over January. If that wasn't good enough, in one of the games, Emily scored 110 against Northern Districts U17!
Congratulations to you all!

3rd July 2019 - Jack Clough (Blue Light International)

In a couple of weeks, Takapuna Grammar student Jack Clough will be representing New Zealand at the Blue Light International Youth Challenge held at the Scottish Police College, Tullianillan Castle, Scotland. "I nominated Jack for this trip after meeting him through the Charity Cricket Match and was really impressed with his attitude, respect, maturity and all round ability. He was selected in a team of 6 students across the whole of NZ. As well as competing in the competition he will get to experience some of the sights of London and the UK."
This trip was heavily subsidised by New Zealand Blue Light to allow students to realistically afford to go. This is just one of the amazing opportunities that Blue Light provides to Young people and one example of where your donations to my page go.

29th March 2019 - Takapuna Grammar back to Premier Grade

TGS booked themselves a place in the promotion final thanks to a big win over top of the table Howick College. In the final, TGS travelled to Rangitoto College, needing to turn around a previous loss to Rangi. The local rivalry was evident as the two sides engaged in friendly banter throughout the day. Rangi won the toss and elected to bat on a notorious pitch with a history of low scores, and an outfield like a freshly mown hay paddock. TGS started nervously with Matt Browning shelling a couple of catches as Rangi reached 28 without loss. Matt soon redeemed himself with two quick wickets which started a procession as Rangi slumped to 65 for 6. Rangi dug in to preserve wickets, batting at a snails pace, eventually all out in the 48th over for 118. Pick of the TGS bowlers was Zac Beaumont with 3 wickets.
In reply, accurate bowling and grass clippings meant runs were hard to come by, Matt Browning top scoring with 26. But at 75 for 2 the boys were cruising to victory. This promoted an increase in the friendly banter and a trip to the naughty corner for one of the Rangi fielders, as they were sent from the field by the umpire to have a wee think about things. Suddenly two wickets fell in successive balls to set the nerves on edge, where they would remain for the rest of the match. The middle order consolidated but wickets fell at regular intervals. Finally we could relax, the scores were tied on 118 with 3 wickets in hand. Then the big quicks struck again with two wickets in consecutive balls. We wondered what was happening as we slumped lower and lower into our camp chairs and reached for the valium. One more wicket to send TGS into the depths of despair and back to the 1a division for another season. Or one run to gain promotion into the big boys league and set TGS on the path to greatness. Mac Dalzell faced a tracer bullet directed at the stumps and pulled off the most important dot ball block shot of his life. That put Campbell McKay on strike as the big quick ran in. A glorious off drive pierced the ring and the boys ran through for a single. And the crowd goes wild!!Congratulations TGS 1st XI and to Mike Tillett for guiding the boys to success in his first season as coach. Thanks to assistant coach Will Clarke, Managers Tony Arthur-Hunt and Steve Browning, TGS groundsman Ian McAlpine, and to all the scorers, parents and supporters. And thanks to the Year 14 boys who made it all possible last season, Will Clarke, Ben Taumoepeau, Cory Pelham and Jude Beaumont. Go Taka!

25th January 2019 - Anna Browning in Devonport Flagstaff

Local cricketer Anna Browning (15) led the Auckland under-15 girls side to a third national tournament win in a row earlier this month.
Anna, who captained the team, achieved 172 runs with an average of 57. She also took 14 wickets and six catches, three runouts and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The title came as no surprise to the team as they had won all of their five games going into the final round against Christchurch. “The games weren’t that tense but they were still very good,” says Anna, who went straight from the under-15tournament in Wanganui to compete in the national under-18 tournament in Wellington.
While Anna found the older age-group tournament a lot more challenging, her team still won all five of their completed games (with one game rained off). “The under-18s are harder to score quicker but it’s a lot better for me to develop faster,” says Anna who, after nine games in a row, was exhausted. At only 15, Anna has made it into the Takapuna Premiers team as one of the youngest members. She will play alongside former coaches and current Auckland Hearts players Lauren Down and Arlene Kelly. “My goal would be to make the Auckland Hearts team or even the White Ferns.”
