Fairtrade is a certification system that aims to provide fair trading conditions for small scale growers in developing countries.
A Fairtrade certified grower receives a minimum price for their coffee or the market value, whichever is higher. This protects small growers from global market changes and ensures they can still cover their costs of production.
Fairtrade also encourages the welfare of workers on the plantations and the sustainability of the crop and the communities they support.
In order to be certified as Fairtrade, growers and packers are audited and inspected to ensure the standards of the Fairtrade organisation are met.
Fairtrade products are usually sold for higher prices with the guarantee that Fairtrade economic and ethical requirements have been met on products bearing the Fairtrade logo.
