My place. Somewhere to go. Somewhere to be whatever and whoever I want. A place to be alone. A place to be alone in nature. Somewhere special...
My place is in the little town of Rico, Colorado. I have lived there my whole life. Recently, I found a place that seems far away from everyone. My friends and I like to drive around in my golf cart and on four-wheelers. We explore every possible road we can, so when we found this small dirt path in West Rico, we were eager to go as far as we could. When we reached the end, it opened up into a small open field with lovely flowers and a beautiful little stream with red rocks to the right of us. We then looked further to find a small, calm pond with the Dolores River to its left. We parked and peered up at the beautiful mountain view. The sun was shimmering down on us as we laughed and enjoyed the beauty of nature.
When you first see this spot, it's already beautiful, but looking deeper there are so many hidden features. From the flocks of ducks to the small stream of red rocks, everything is gorgeous. I felt connected to the land and where I live. We took some photos and looked around once more, then made our way up the road. At that moment, I knew that I had to come back, that this was my place. Maybe I would come back to be alone, with my friends, or maybe for a picnic. This place is so beautiful I wonder who else has come here and experienced this beauty.
Maybe it was Robert C. Darling when he came to this area in the summer of 1870 and founded the town of Rico. I wonder if he saw that spot with the pond and knew that would be the place to settle. The hope of silver and other resources, the beauty of nature all drawing him to this place. Looking around he saw the water, the rocks, the mountains, all possibilities of becoming rich, (or in Spanish rico) living a wonderful life on the Dolores River between Ophir and Dolores. Seeing what I saw but in a different light.
For me it’s a place to get away, to hang out with friends, to feel separated from society. For him, hope for a new life. A hope to become rich and start a community in these wondrous mountains. We have different views, but standing on the same ground, it shows this idea of perspective and awe. It shows through the green of the trees, the flow of the water, and the movement of the wildlife. Everything has its own role in making this place beautiful. This place has a special touch, to tell you its ideas, and help you find peace in the moment. That is why it's my place, my special place.
