Off Road

"AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE, AS FAST AS NECESSARY"

All the published clearance numbers are measured at manual off-road height. The Discovery is capable of lifting an additional 2" above manual off-road height when stuck, witch actually makes the maximum approach, departure, break-over and ground clearance numbers greater than what is published.

When shifting from Low Range to High Range the vehicle can be moving up to 30 mph, but may have to be in neutral while rolling, also not sure if this also works when shifting from High Range to Low Range. Will be experimenting and will report back.

Low Range 3rd Gear is roughly equivalent to 1st gear in high range.

TERRAIN RESPONSE MODES, Simplified!

Tires can be deflated as low as 10 psi in any of these off-road modes to aid with traction. I usually set them to 15 psi and then I can lower it more if I get really stuck.

AUTO - Auto mode will attempt to select the proper driving mode for you, however it is reactive, it doesn't change modes until it senses wheel spin or suspension changes, etc. Selecting a mode manually is proactive and may help prevent you from getting stuck or damaging your car. It's always better to proactively select the proper terrain mode if you can. Auto is a step above not having it for people who don't understand or know which mode to use but not a replacement for manual selection.

GENERAL PROGRAM - Dry on road conditions

GRASS, GRAVEL & SNOW = Slippery, icy or wet, hard packed surfaces or roads.

This mode will cause your transmission to start out in 2nd gear (3rd gear when in low range). It will remove some sensitivity from the gas pedal and will become very aggressive at looking for and controlling wheel spin, more so than normal on-road driving mode. It will also remove some articulation in an effort to maintain better control. Never, ever use this setting during off-roading. It is counter-productive to do so.

Use this mode for low traction launch (crawl control) to reduce the amount of wheel spin to the minimum.

HDC (Hill Decent Control) - Is turned on

MUD & RUTS = Off-road, Muddy, Rutted, Soft or uneven, non-paved dirt trails. (a general all-purpose off-road mode)

This setting allows the transmission to start in first gear even when using low range, thus allowing more torque to make it where it is needed. It will increase articulation and be a little more forgiving of wheel spin. Use caution if off-roading in low range, in this setting as it is a very strange feeling to be in first gear/low range until you get used to it. Better suited for mud, ruts, pot holes, gravel covered trails, snow covered trails, great setting for most off road situations with the exception of the next two.

HDC (Hill Decent Control) - Is turned on

SAND = Sand, deep gravel, or deep snow (not ice).

Use it for terrain that is predominantly soft like dry sand, deep gravel or deep snow. It is the best setting for the deep, sugar sand like a trip to the beach. It will cause your transmission to "hang on" to the lower gears longer before allowing for an up shift. That translates into more torque, something essential in deep sand to keep the tires moving. It will also desensitize the DSC even further to allow for some wheel spin, all in an effort to make sure you keep forward momentum. If terrain is damp or wet and deep enough to cause the wheels to sink, select the mud-ruts mode.

GRC (Gradient Release Control) - Is disabled in Sand mode.

HDC (Hill Decent Control) - Is disabled in Sand Mode

ROCK = Rocky or uneven surfaces.

Use for traversing predominantly rocky terrain including crossing a river with submerged rocks. It will greatly remove control from the gas pedal, will allow for the greatest amount of articulation and will force the vehicle into Low Range. Use mainly for what its name implies.

You can turn off DSC anytime automatic brake application or power reduction is preventing the vehicle from making forward progress. The different terrain modes adjust the sensitivity of the DSC system but don't completely deactivate it.
