Writing Tasks
Choose one or two of the activities to do each day. Remember to celebrate a child's ability to tell a story; oral language is an important start for writing, especially as an early learner.
Draw a picture of all the people in your family. Can you write their names underneath?
Draw a picture and write a sentence about your favourite story book. Can you write another sentence saying WHY it is your favourite?
Write your name in 4 different colours (rainbow writing)
Write a story about your favourite animal
Draw a picture of a space alien (write their name and what makes them special)
Spread some flour/sand (or something like it) across a surface and write your name and the alphabet in it. (Write your families name in it too)
What is your favourite dinner? Draw a picture of it for your family.

3-Picture Story - Think of a story. Draw a picture to show what happens at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of your story. Tell your story to someone in your bubble.
Acrostic Poem - Write your name in a line down the side of your page. Using the letter on each line, think of a word/phrase to describe yourself e.g. E - Energetic, L - Lovely, L - Loving, A - Awesome.

Writing Tasks: Some of these tasks are designed for you and your child to do together, help them as much as they need. :)
Alongside these writing activities you will need to do a page in your handwriting book daily if you have it. If you don't then you can choose a letter daily and practice writing in a scrap book.
Write a letter to someone in your family. Remember to use your capital letters and full stops.
Pick a story starter from the writing ideas hand out sheet and draw a picture. Then you can write an exciting, detailed story. (This may be done over a few days). See List added below
Create a character. Describe what the character looks like and a bit about what they like to do.
Write secret notes to the people in your house. Tell them something you love about them or why they are so special to you.
Create a list of instructions on how to make something. Eg. A sandwich, a craft, a game.
Write a letter to Miss Taylor/Mr Whitesmith telling us about what you have been doing at home.
Pick your favourite book. Write a story telling me what it is about.
Chose one of your favourite books to copy a page out of. Do this in your scrap book. Share this with someone in your family.
Interview a family member about their favourite memory from their childhood. Write down their answers in your scrap book.
Using your senses. Choose a time you felt really happy.
What could you see? ...What could you hear?...What could you smell?...What could you taste?...What could you feel? This might take a few days.
Draw a picture of a big ice cream with different flavours and toppings. Write about your ice cream.
Story Starter Ideas for Writing With Your Children:
· Imagine a giant box is delivered to your front door with your name on it. What’s inside?
· Write a story about what might happen if one day you woke up with a mermaid's tail?
· If you had $1000 what would you buy? And why?
· What do you want to be when you grow up? and why?
· If you could have a secret power what would it be? And why?
· Write a story about flying into outer space and discovering a new planet.
· You are walking through a forest and the trees start talking to you. What do they say?
· Write a travel guide for kids visiting Napier. What should they do here?
· If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?
· What are you really good at doing?
· Write a list of all your favourite things. Eg. Colour, food, animal…
· What is something you look forward to doing the most when you are an adult?
· If you could give one thing to every child in the world, what would it be?
· If you won a never-ending supply of spaghetti, what would you do with it all?
· Write 5 things you really want to do in your lifetime, like a bucket list.
· What would be the most fun job to have in the world and why?
· If you could drive a car, where would you drive to? And why?
Week 2 Learning Tasks:
Draw a picture of yourself. Write words around the picture of you that describe you and what makes you special. You could do this for another member of your family too.
Tell us why your favourtie food is the best food in the world. Draw a picture of that food.
Write a list of some of your favourite books you like to read.
Design a room. You can draw it or cut pictures out of a magazine. Label the things you have put in your room. Eg. chair, bed, tv, teddy bear.
Encourage your child to help you write a shopping list with you to take to the supermarket next time you go.
Write your name down the side of a piece of paper in big letters and think of a word for each letter of your name.
After you have practiced some of your sight words, choose 5 words you find tricky to remember and write them down.
Create a treasure map. Don't forget to label your map.
"My Hero" draw a picture of your hero and write some words that describe your hero.
Start to read one of your books, when you get half way through the book, close it and think of a different ending for that story.

1)Write your spelling words or sight words in the air and see if someone in your bubble can guess what they are.

3)How many compound words can you find around the house. Record in a list. i.e. fireplace, doormat, bathtub.
4)Describe your best friend, how you met, and why you are friends.
5)Describe your favorite animal and why.

1) How many words can you write using only these letters; Q A, B, E, S, H, T, O, N, I, J, U.
2)Draw a comic strip to how the sequence of events that occur in a book you are reading now. Can you add dialogue to each picture to show what the character was saying. Don't forget to use speechmarks, commas, capitals and fullstops.
3)Write 5 sentences that need a question mark or an exclamation mark.
4)Write about what would you do if you could change the world?
