Please note that Teach For America staff are restricted from giving any financial advice (this is to protect both us and you!) because we are not financial experts. But we can provide you information and point you in the direction of resources. Use the links below for guidance around finance questions.
At Teach For America, we believe a commitment to equity means providing our corps members with the support and resources they need to focus on what matters—student impact. That’s why we’ve expanded our Teach For America Corps Member Financial Support to cover more contingencies and provide more assistance than ever. Because the less you have to think about money, the more you get to think about changing students’ lives.
To help bridge the gap in transitioning to the corps, all incoming corps members will receive Transitional Financial Support in the amount of $5,000. These funds are offered to help cover expenses as you engage in your summer training and for start-up costs in the region. For the 2022 and 2023 corps, our Pell* or DACA+ recipients will receive a baseline transitional support of a $10,000 grant.
Please review this one-pager to learn more about the full financial package offered this summer.
As you plan to join us, if you have concerns about your finances as you plan for your move please check out the Need-Based Financial Support FAQS.
Note about Transitional Funding Information
If you need part of your award package before you start summer training, you can apply for early disbursal of a limited part of your Transitional financial support grant and a limited part of your need-based loan. SEE BELOW.
In 2020, TFA launched an initiative called Black Educators Promise (BEP), a five-year grant to specifically invest in retaining Black educators teaching in our network beyond their two-year commitment and into a 3rd and 4th year. As part of this initiative, TFA provides direct-to participant BEP Grants, awarding $600 to each Black incoming TFA corps member and $1000 to 2nd-year corps members who commit to teaching a 3rd year in a predominantly low-income school.
All applicants are eligible to receive a portion of their Transitional Financial Support Stipend amount, as determined by their region. Every ICM who applies qualifies for at least $500 of their Transitional Stipend. You can see the total amount for your region in this list.
Please note that the amount of Early Disbursal Transitional Financial Support Stipend you receive will be deducted from the Stipend you were originally offered for the summer.
So if you were offered a $5,000 Stipend, and receive a $500 Early Disbursal Stipend, you will be issued a $4,500 Stipend during Pre-Service Training.
You are also able to apply for more than this amount, which, if approved, will also be deducted from your Transitional Financial Support Stipend. All early disbursal will be in the form of a grant.
Total Cost for CM = $168*
TFA Phoenix is committed to ensuring that these onboarding/certification costs do not serve as a barrier that prevents corps members from being able to matriculate. Corps members who are in unique financial situations may qualify for reimbursements for some of these costs. To see if you qualify please contact Bri (Bri.Brawley@teachforamerica.org) or Tony (Tony.Best@teachforamerica.org).

Monthly Pre-Tax Salary: based on a salary of $44,500

Over 95% of our CMs use their AmeriCorps Education Award to pay for their certification/degree from ASU.
However billing at ASU is due each semester and the AmeriCorps Educaton award is only available at the END of each semester. There are several options, that require no money out-of-pocket to cover the cost of your program.
1. Take Out Loans - this is the MOST popular option. CMs take out a student loan, the interest is defer while you are a CM/student. Then you pay your loan using your AmeriCorps Ed Award.
2. Apply for AZ Teacher's Academy - this group will pay for your degree, leaving the AmeriCorps Ed Award to be used for past or future education loans/expenses.
3. Pay out of Pocket - again, you can use the AmeriCorps Ed Award for past or future expenses.
