This page is designed to provide information and insight to interventionist, counselors, teachers, parents and students that might be looking for educational resources regarding substance use and or abuse. The education provided could assist in developing a new perspective on how to have better life outcomes when dealing with using illegal or controlled substances. In addition, we would like to provide information and insight to individuals that are looking for resources to address the perspectives of having better manageability of life outcomes without illegal/controlled substances.
When dealing with adolescent alcohol/drug abuse, use, or dependency, a salient approach to interrupt problematic actions should be focused in three (3) areas for a higher probability of success: The student/individual, Family/guardian support system, Outside resources/third parties.
The AUD course is broken up into three (3) phases, these phases can be viewed on the A.U.D. Consent form above. Typically a student with the charge of FNCF will be in the process of returning to their home school in phase 3 of the course. There have been cases where a student is in the process of returning to there home school in phase 2 of the course as well. There is no set time that a student will be sent to alternative placement. The decision of how much time the student will receive in alternative placement is made after a discussion takes place with the hearing officers about the frequency and severity of the behavior the student displayed. When a student returns to their home campus the counselor/interventionist will come to the students campus and continue to meet with them weekly. The time frame for this process should not exceed a year from the date of admission into the course. When the counselor/interventionist and student have created a plan and student successfully completes the objectives on the plan, bi-weekly or monthly meetings will discontinue. An attempt to contact the student 6 months after the completion of the course will take place.
The FWISD Office of Student Discipline and Placement referred students for participation in the Addiction, Using or Dependency (“AUD”) course based on a violation of FWISD Board Policy FNCF (Alcohol and/or Drug Use). Students referred were identified as possibly having an issue with illegal/controlled substances based on their most recent events and circumstances.
It was recommended that the student complete the Drug Abuse Screening Test (“DAST-10”); a ten (10) question screening tool that assesses drug use in the past 12 months. There are other screening tools used to assess the severity of a students involvement with substances like alcohol (13 questions) with the SMAST and for marijuana with the CUDIT-R (8 questions). The AUD course was a voluntary program designed to promote abstinence from substance usage/abuse as well as provide counseling on tactics of how to maintain a healthier lifestyle when dealing with conditions of using illegal/controlled substances for personal use, sales, or manufacturing (harm reduction). Although the AUD course is currently considered a voluntary program, participation in the course was only granted when referred by Hearing Officers in the Central Office Conference (“COC”) in the past. Rather than being viewed as receiving a negative consequence, being in the AUD course should be considered a benefit. The goal of the program was to reduce the frequency of this particular offense with the student. Shifting the focus of the student regarding their involvement with the illegal/controlled substances is the primary goal. It was our hope to do so via individual counseling, chemical dependency education or through referral of additional support services.
!!! As it stands all student that participated in the program did not reoffend with the same action that made them eligible for this program. Please see statistical analysis
