Syllabus for Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AJROTC)

INTRODUCTION: Welcome to the Eagle Battalion AJROTC program! The goal of Diamond Hill-Jarvis High School AJROTC is to prepare students for their future—college, career, and military readiness. We do this while simultaneously developing each cadet’s leadership potential and character. The AJROTC program combines classroom instruction, physical fitness, and integrated curricular activities to develop cadets' awareness of the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of citizenship, foster a sense of personal responsibility, promote wellness and physical fitness, build life skills, and provide leadership opportunities.

OBJECTIVE: “To motivate young people to be better citizens.”

CURRICULUM: Course content includes: Character and Leadership Development, Wellness, Physical Fitness, and First Aid, Drill and Ceremonies, Geography, Citizenship and American History, Career Opportunities, Technology Awareness, Command and Staff Procedures, Consumer Education, and Financial Management. The curriculum also incorporates reading skills and strategies (weekly class readings, essays, etc.). Cadets incur no obligation to join the military as a result of their enrollment in JROTC.

MATERIALS: All textbooks and reference materials, including uniform items, are provided at no expense. Cadets must return all items at the end of the school year, or upon withdrawal or transfer from the school, to avoid incurring a financial obligation

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Cadets are expected to attend class, follow classroom procedures, participate in classroom learning activities, and complete all assignments. In case of absence, it is the cadet’s responsibility to make up assignments missed, according to a timeframe approved by the instructor. Cadets in LET levels 2 and above are expected to be positive role models.

UNIFORMS: All cadets enrolled in the JROTC program are issued a set of Class-A uniforms and equipment for regular wear. Uniform-Wear Day will be the first A or B Day of the school week. Weekly uniform inspections and the appropriate display of military courtesy constitute a significant portion of the overall grade. All cadets must become familiar with Army JROTC dress code standards. Cadets will participate in selective formations and inspections, as well as other school and JROTC ceremonies. Uniforms are issued to cadets at no cost. At the conclusion of the academic year, or upon disenrollment, cadets are required to return all uniforms and issued items in a clean condition. Failure to return any item will result in a fine equal to the replacement cost of the missing item.

ACTIVITIES: Physical Training (PT) is essential for becoming a well-rounded leader. PT is conducted once a week during classroom time. Cadets are encouraged to change into sports attire during PT activities. Extra-curricular and competitive activities include Color Guard, Drill Team, Cadet Challenge competitions, Leadership/Academic events, field trip(s), the annual JROTC Ball, and a 7-day Summer Camp. Cadets may earn community service points in most activities and are urged to participate in at least one activity per semester. In addition to academic elective credit for the course, cadets also earn rank, privileges, and JROTC awards for their achievements. Qualified cadets will also have the opportunity to compete for a college scholarship. (See attached event list for more details)

GRADES: All JROTC assignments and activities are graded unless otherwise instructed. Some of the graded assignments and activities for this year are: assigned classwork, JROTC uniform wear, military drill, physical training, service learning, and other activities. Each of these assignments will be entered in FOCUS under the appropriate grading category and is worth 100% each. Parents are encouraged to contact the school counseling office to obtain a Parent Portal account to check their children's grades and attendance. Our goal is to record all assignments in the Parent Portal daily so parents and students can check their grades and attendance regularly.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES: School rules and regulations will apply in the classroom setting and at off-campus events. In addition, the following rules apply: Dress code compliance will be enforced. Cadets are expected to enter the JROTC classroom quietly for attendance before the tardy bell rings. The door will be shut when the tardy bell rings, and tardy cadets will be let in only if they have a tardy pass, marked tardy for the class. Cadets are expected to arrive in class properly dressed for the day’s activities. Cadets are expected to be quiet during all intercom announcements. Cadets are expected to render the proper respect and military courtesy to the academy staff, school faculty, and cadet chain of command. Cadets will not eat or drink in the classroom during instructional time. Cadets are expected to help keep the classroom neat.  Additionally, expectations/procedures / corrective measures are designated by the JROTC instructors.

DESIGN OF A TYPICAL LESSON: Each student will be given a student learning plan. The instructor will provide information for students through various techniques (i.e., lectures, small group exercises, self-paced instruction, video-based instructional media, student-led instruction, and student research projects). Instruction will be conducted inside or outside the classroom, as most appropriate (and as weather permits).  Closure lesson content will be summarized, and objectives reviewed, and students will complete a writing reflection.  Independent practice, study, and review will be conducted as appropriate.

DISCIPLINE POLICY:  Cadet behavior that cannot be corrected with in-class disciplinary measures will be referred to the administration. The Tardy Discipline Policy will be strictly enforced. Electronics will be stored (out of sight). If the instructor has to confiscate the item, it will be turned over to the administration.

ACCOMMODATIONS:  Any student needing physical accommodations will inform the instructor (with medical/parental documentation if appropriate), and arrangements will be made.
