Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a scout? Scouting is a fun and interactive organization where members learn about wildlife, self confidence and teamwork. Nick Browning is a Life Scout with Troop 592. Nick told me about something called Scout Sunday. “This shows ordinary people that Scouts are a part of everyday life, not just meetings and badges,” says Browning. Scout Sunday is also about showing our duty to God and country, which is part of the Scout oath. Scout Sunday can be many things. Volunteering to do service projects, planting trees and even organizing pet adoption events.
An event coming up for the members of Troop 592 is our Scout welcome campout at Camp Smith.“Camp Smith Campout is to expose new people to scouting in general,” says Browning. This campout is quite necessary for Cub Scouts to learn about Boy Scouts. Speaking of Cub Scouts, what does it take to move from Cub Scout to Boy Scout? You don’t really need to go to Cub Scout to become a Boy Scout but you do get a cool patch. When you're a Cub Scout you must become an “arrow of light,” which is the highest rank in Cub Scouts. Then you have to have a “crossover” ceremony into a troop.
There are two types of service projects. The first is a regular service project, where people do 1-6 hours of a project to help the community. Scouts should do this at least once a month. Then there are Eagle projects, which go on longer than regular ones.“Scouts are required to do service projects to learn what is done for them, and to give back to the community that supports them,” says Browning.
Joining Scouts BSA is an excellent way for young people to get excited about the great outdoors. Scouting is where boys and girls ages 11 through 17 develop leadership skills, a passion for service, and experience personal growth while participating in fun challenges and adventures with other Scouts. My personal experience with scouts has been quite good. I have learned leadership skills and general things about wildlife. This one time I was on a dock in a lake and I decided to go barefoot (I forgot why) and I accidentally got a big long splinter in my foot. My brother got me to the medic and it was all good.
