FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

New students often have some trouble getting started.

Click on the questions to see the answers to these Frequently Asked Questions:

How will I start my course?

If you haven't logged into your student account yet, that is your first priority! All virtual classroom content MUST be accessed using your student account, so you will not be able to start until you've accessed your student account. See the second question on this page for more details on logging in for the first time.

Your teacher(s) should reach out to you by the first day of the course via email or phone with some instructions. Teachers may send you an invite to your TDSB account, so check your student email through aw.tdsb.on.ca by logging in and clicking "Mail" in the top menu.

If you need to contact your teacher, and you can't find their email address, contact us at yalcstudentservices@gmail.com.

How do I log in for the first time?

In order to log in, you will need your TDSB student number. If you don't know your student number, please request it here: Request My Student Number

If you have your student number, please refer to this document for full login instructions: How to Log In

This video will also walk through the process: LOGIN VIDEO

How can I see/change my timetable?

An email should've been sent to you with your timetable, however, if you don't have it, you can see it on the TDSB Connects app. See details here: TDSBConnects Information

If you'd like to request a timetable change, you can do so by completing the timetable change form found on the Main Page of our site.

Note: The last day for timetable changes is 4 days after the start of the quad. Students cannot add a course to their schedule after that time.

When should I attend classes?

*ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED.

Yorkdale's courses are NOT asynchronous. This means you must attend the live classes whether they are in-person or online, or you will be removed from the course.

Classes run Monday-Friday at their designated times.

If you are unsure of your timetable, please ASK YOUR TEACHER.

How can I find my teacher?

The timetable you received should include your teacher's last name.

If you don't have an updated timetable, you can see it on the TDSB Connects app. See details here: TDSBConnects

Starting Your Course:

Your teacher(s) should reach out to you by the course start date via email or phone with some instructions. Teachers may send you an invite to your TDSB account, so make sure to activate your student account as soon as possible. Check your student email through aw.tdsb.on.ca by logging in and clicking "Mail" in the top menu.

If you need to contact your teacher, and you can't find their email address, contact us at yalcstudentservices@gmail.com.

How can I tell if my classes are in-person or online?

*In accordance with COVID-19 regulations, all courses are running either as in-person or online depending on overall student preference per course.

You can see whether your course is in-person or online by referring to the COURSE CODE on your timetable.

Example Course Code: ENG4CV-4L
ENG4CV refers to the course.
4L refers to the section. Sections ending in a letter, such as L, R, and V are online-only. Sections ending with a number, 1 or 2 are in-person.

If you are unsure, please ASK YOUR TEACHER.

If you'd like to CHANGE your classes, you can do so in the first 4 days of the quad ONLY.

Please note, some classes may have full sections for online or in-person, so not all requests will be possible. If it is past the deadline for changes, please email yalcstudentservices@gmail.com for more information.

How can I access Google Classroom?

  1. Go to aw.tdsb.on.ca

  2. Login using your student number, student email, and password

  3. From the AW homepage, hover over "Google Apps" at the top menu

  4. Click "Classroom"

  5. You should be able to see your classroom spaces in the next window. Your teacher may have invited you to the class already, and if they did, you should see the space there. If your class does not appear here, you can ask your teacher for a CODE to join.

See this video for reference: TDSB Student Login to Google Classroom

If you're logging in on a phone, it is easiest to download the Google Classroom app.

*Having Trouble? Try this...
If you have a personal Gmail account, it can disrupt your login to your student account. Classroom access is only allowed on your student account, but Google tends to re-route you to your personal account, causing disruption. To prevent this, it is best to use an Incognito or Private window when accessing your student work.

If you don't know how to do this, you can refer to this video: TDSB student account on a personal device

How can I access Brightspace?

  1. Go to aw.tdsb.on.ca

  2. Login using your student number and password

  3. From the AW homepage, hover over "Resources" at the top menu

  4. Click "Brightspace"

  5. You may be asked to log in again, but this time use your TDSB email and password. Your TDSB email should look something like this: firstname.lastname@student.tdsb.on.ca

For login instructions, also read through this instruction sheet: How to Login to Brightspace or Google Classroom

For login instructions on a phone, see this video: Brightspace Login on Phone (Toronto District School Board)

FUN FACT: If you log in while at school, you skip step #5 because you are on the school network. But when you log in from home, then you have to remember step #5!

How do I reset my password?

If it is your first time logging in, you will use a default password that is explained in the following video: http://bit.do/YALCloginvideo

If it is not your first time logging in, but you've forgotten your password, go to aw.tdsb.on.ca and click the "Forgot Your Password?" option below the Login button. You will be asked to enter in your username which is your STUDENT NUMBER. If you don't know your student number, you can request it here: Request my Student Number

Choose the "Forgot My Password" option following the login.

IF THE ABOVE FAILS, ask your teacher to reset your password for you. If you have more than one teacher, make sure to only ask ONE teacher. If multiple teachers try to reset it for you, it may lead to confusion.
