Who Needs An Assessment?
You need to write our assessment if:
• You are new to school in Canada
• You have NOT taken English or math courses in Ontario at the high school level
• You are interested in Specialty Certificate program, and it has been more than 5 years since you have taken courses in Ontario at the high school level
You do NOT need to write our assessment if:
• You have completed English or Math courses in Ontario's curriculum (this includes Toronto Catholic Board, York Region, Peel, etc...)
• You have attended another TDSB school, including regular high schools and other adult day schools (CALC, SCAS, Emery, or Burnhamthorpe)
• IELTS, CELPIP, TOEFL tests may be considered at this time for English language requirements for entry into Yorkdale ALC
If you do not assess at a high enough level, you will be referred to Essential Skills Upgrading before joining Yorkdale: https://www.tdsb.on.ca/Adult-Learners/Learn-English/Essential-Skills-Upgrading

Math Assessment
The math assessment includes various questions at differing levels. See an exemplar here.
English Assessment
Our English assessment will include a reading and writing component. The reading section will be all multiple choice questions. The writing section will include a question that you write a paragraph or short essay to answer the question.
At this time, there is no oral test. But you will have the opportunity to speak with a counsellor over the phone within a few days of your written English assessment.
