Here at Duke we are fortunate to have 4 teachers providing instruction in Music, Drama and Dance! Please read below to find out more information on each program.
Some examples of programming available to students during a typical school year are: Singing, guitars, strings and band for the intermediate students. Singing, recorder, ukulele, Boomwhackers, handbells and Orff for the Junior students and singing, recorder, Orff, Boomwhackers and handbells for the Primaries.
The kindergarten program focuses on fostering a joy of music through a variety of experiential learning opportunities. Our young musicians listen to, understand and feel music with their whole bodies while developing useful skills, such as communicating and cooperating with others, singing on pitch, expressing emotions and enhancing rhythmic and literacy skills.
In music, drama and dance we explore our own communities and the world beyond our city through movement, speech and song. Students are encouraged to become creators through the arts while learning fundamental concepts.

In term 2, students will apply the critical analysis process to communicate their feelings, ideas, and understandings in response to a variety of music and musical experiences. Students will also demonstrate an understanding of a variety of musical genres and styles from the past and present, and their sociocultural and historical contexts.
Rhythm is embedded in everyday life from your heartbeat, to the language that we speak, to the rhythm of the windshield wipers on your car, and the stride in your footsteps. It's everywhere. Music in the junior and intermediate grades at Duke this year is all about singing and learning to read music notation. Our focus will be on learning to sing and create performance pieces by rote and through reading traditional notation. A whole lot of performing going on!!
