In the TDSB, Early French Immersion (JK) is a system-wide “Intensive” French program where students develop their proficiency in French by studying French language as well as other subjects taught in French. It is designed for families who do not speak French at home.
Early French Immersion begins this year for the first time, in Junior Kindergarten, as part of our Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) program. All class activities are conducted exclusively in French until the end of Grade 3, although some rotary subjects (like music, health and self-regulation) may be taught in English. Formal English instruction is introduced in Grade 4 for about one hour per day and increases to half of the daily class time for Grades 6-8. Students who successfully complete the Secondary French Immersion program will receive a Certificate of Bilingual Studies in French Immersion from the TDSB upon graduation.
