Resources for French

Learning in and/or the development of a second- or third-language vocabulary and skills take hard work and practice, practice, practice! Here are some essential tools and resources that we suggest for all students.  Several of these websites also have apps to make them even more accessible.

The inappropriate use of online translators or apps such as Google Translate or Bon Patron and / or tools such as ChatGPT is not helpful to students in the genuine acquisition of language vocabulary or skills. Dependence on these sites and digital tools must be avoided at all times especially for homework and assessment tasks that are evaluated.

WordReference is an excellent tool for anyone learning another language including French and Spanish. It can be used as a dictionary for numerous languages and provides a detailed choice of words. Students should read through the choices to determine which word is the most correct for the context they are using. This invaluable resource also includes a Language Forum to ask specific questions to native-language speakers as well as a verb conjugation section.

Bescherelle  is the gold standard of verb conjugation resources. All of the verb tenses as well as verb modes (modes de verbe) can be found here. Simply type in the verb and the different forms will be displayed. Students should pay attention to whether or not agreement should be made between the subject pronoun (je, tu, il, elle, qui, nous, vous, ils, elles) and the form of the verb (le participe passé).

Alloprof  is a site for students and their parents to help support them on their French academic and learning journey. There are learning modules in all subjects at all levels as well as practice quizzes and questions in all curricular areas. You choose the topic (such as fractions in mathématiques), the number of questions and the difficulty.
