What does the Special Education Department do?
The Special Education department at Stephen Leacock CI is committed to supporting all students in their academic careers. We recognize that every student is unique and each one must have the opportunities to achieve success according to their own interests, abilities, and goals. We focus on providing resources and supports to all students, regardless of identification or exceptionality.
The department is comprised of Special Education teachers, Child and Youth Workers (CYWs), Educational Assistants (EAs), and Special Needs Assistants (SNAs).
Development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs),
Providing access to assistive technology and laptops
Providing access to additional supports through referrals to the School Support Team (SST)
Maintaining a Resource Room for students to access in the afternoon as an alternative workspace
Individualized supports around academics, social-emotional needs, behaviour, sensory needs, and transitions
ASD Program
Stephen Leacock also has an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Intensive Support Program (ISP) for students who are placed through the IPRC process. The ASD classes provide a small-group setting with a number of Special Education staff to support the needs of students with ASD, including supports for academics, behaviour, social skills, and transition planning. The program also runs a number of social events, field trips and we run a store called "The Biz", where students learn life skills while running our schools convenience store.
