All students are required to complete at least 40 Community Service Hours. Know that hours counted towards this requirement must be completed through Non-For-Profit or charitable organizations and endeavors (not all volunteering is community service). This is not to say that students shouldn’t take on other volunteer opportunities as those are valuable for personal growth and experience, however they will not count towards the 40 Community Service hours.
To be sure, please check with the organization and speak to your guidance counsellor before completing an activity you plan to submit for this requirement.
It is the student’s responsibility to find volunteer opportunities. See back of the Community Service Form for ideas and visit www.volunteertoronto.ca
It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of their hours. Even if hours are completed at the school, students must get staff to sign off on the form. We will not accept hours from teachers, they must be submitted by the student. We suggest that at the end of each school year, students record their hours (Key Club, Tutoring, Library etc.) on a form and have the teacher advisor sign off.
Forms are available outside the guidance office.
Please only submit the hours to your guidance counsellor once you’ve completed all 40 so we can check off the requirement as complete.
When a student reaches the age of 18, the student is an “adult” for the purposes of the Education Act and the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, which stipulates the student’s written consent is required for the school or TDSB to disclose their personal information (report cards, transcripts, attendance record(s), late/absent notifications, excursion forms, and all regular school communications, including any other official record pertaining to the student’s ongoing education at the Toronto District School Board).
In order for the parent(s)/legal guardian(s) to continue receiving information about their adult student’s education, the TDSB requires the adult student’s written consent. If the adult student does not provide consent, then the school and TDSB will be unable to provide personal information to the adult student’s parent(s)/legal guardian(s) and will communicate with the adult student.
Students over 18 can return the Consent Form to the main office.
See TDSB info about the Online Learning Graduation Requirement here.
Opting-Out of the e-Learning Graduation Requirement: Students may withdraw from the online e-Learning requirement. A parent/caregiver/guardian or student (18 years of age or older) may withdraw by submitting the TDSB Opt Out/Withdrawal Form to their school. No explanation or reason is needed to opt out/withdraw.
Opting out can be done by following the link below or by printing this Opt Out/Withdrawal From and returning it to guidance or the main office.
