Activity is large factor in living a balanced, and healthy lifestyle. There are countless ways to stay active, as long as we keep my mind open and try new things. I am fortunate that my during my upbringing, I was taught by several amazing Health and Phys-Ed (HPE) teachers. What made them amazing and memorable was the exploration of various sports and activities. I remember enjoying units in volleyball, basketball, badminton, self-defense, and fitness, and let's not forget play-days! Additionally, these teachers ran extra-curricular teams where I could explore what it means to try-out, make the team, but more importantly, dedicate myself to always improving being a significant contributor. Just as importantly, intramurals ran all year round and I remember playing all sorts of sports with my friends, while staying active.
Sport and activity also allowed for exploration of how to win, and how to accept defeat; but more importantly, what to do after both. Thankfully I was in a safe environment where coaches, and teammates wanted to always strive for improvement, no matter the outcome.
Sport and activity is for everyone, but sometimes we need coaches and teammates/friends to show us a range of activities to be active. We can't always rely on sports, or in the case of the pandemic, we can't rely on facilities (or meeting in person) all the time. It all comes down to individual ability to try various activities for movement to stay healthy. There is something to be said about variety as it is key to the ability to adapt to all circumstances. In life, the ability to adapt, and always be open to new ideas and concepts is fundamental in terms of long-term success; it is this parallel with HPE and life that fuels my passion in this field.
I feel called to educate our students and community the various ways to enjoy movement, sport, and achieving optimal health. Every single student is unique, therefore a variety of activities is required. In our program, students will be immersed in a variety of team sports (ie basketball, ultimate frisbee), but also balanced with individual pursuits (ie Yoga, Track and Field, strength conditioning and Mindfulness). Not one student is left behind.
