Guidance & Student Success Team

Building You Up to Get You Where You Need

The Guidance Department at St. Joan takes great pride in offering a variety of services for our students.  Our mandate is to assist students with their academic needs and wishes, their career aspirations and their emotional issues.

Our counsellors are well-equipped to support students and their families.  Where necessary, our students can access additional services with the intervention of our team of CYWs (Child and Youth Worker), School Social Worker and School Psychologist.

Meet Mr. Correia

Mr. Correia has been teaching at St. Joan for 17 years.  He came to Canada at 16 years of age.  He wanted to be in the position where he could inspire students in the same way that his teachers inspired him.  Mr. Correia has been a teacher of many subjects from the ISP program all the way to University preparation, which is a broad perspective he brings to his position as Head of the Guidance Department.

Q. What is your goal as the Guidance Head?

Mr. Correia: "My focus is always on putting students first and making sure that we focus on student achievement and well-being. To this day, I still cannot believe I am getting paid to do what I love and truly believe in.

I want students to feel that St. Joan is a safe, welcoming place for them.  I also try to be the bridge between students and their classroom teachers by advocating directly for his students and teaching them to advocate for themselves.  Sometimes it just takes one adult to believe in that one child to make all the difference in the world."

What can the Guidance Department Do For You?

It Takes a Village to Create a Culture of Belonging

Meet Ms. Murray

I have 22 years of experience in both the educational and clinical health sector with a specialty working with adolescents with mental health, as well as at-risk, diverse, and marginalized youth.

Work closely with students, their families, community agencies and collaborate with educators in service of students.

Q. What is the best thing about being a CYW?

There is so much work that gets done here!  The best thing about being a CYW is cultivating change and working with marginalized youth to empower them to use their voice and be brave.  I help them with the day-to-day struggles of being a young person whether it is academic, family, relationships, or mental wellness, it all connects and has an impact on them.  I create a safe space for students to self-explore.  My role is to listen to students and make sure they feel heard, validated, and valued, so that they can strategize and self-reflect.
