The Engineering Design Process is used during STEAM projects. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
The EDP has a five-step process -
This is the recipe for a great project!
For the first step, we had to ask if revitalization is a realistic or necessary goal for Birmingham. We discussed what we knew about Birmingham and areas we thought could use revitalizing. We chose to look into revitalization for this city because we live near the area and are pretty familiar with what is going on in the area. In the end, we decided that Birmingham could benefit greatly from revitalization and it was time to improve.
The second step is to imagine and brainstorm to find a solution to our problem. So, we started research on feasible ways to perfect downtown Birmingham. We know the crime rates are really high in Birmingham so we wanted to revitalize neighborhoods with gang activity. We also wanted to renew old, and wearing down buildings. Then, we looked at how much money the government would need and decided to plan some fundraisers. So, we separated into our Jigsaw groups to imagine what we could do.
Once we had gotten out of our jigsaw groups, we went into our home groups to plan what we were going to put on the website. Our teacher gave us different subjects to look deeper into and become experts on the topic. Then, we made brochures to help us get the exact research for the website. These were our rough drafts for our topics on the actual website.
The next step was to create the website. We all split into a whole different set of groups to create the website and WeVideo. We used all of the research we had gathered to create our website. We critiqued our flyers and fixed what needed to be completed before we put it into our website. Once we were done, we organized our tabs and put on the finishing touches to complete our website.
Finally, after we were done with our website we sought ways to improve what we created. The class went over the whole website and proofread each others work to make it better than before. Then, we added a few new tabs and presented our final product to other teachers and administrators in the school to get their feedback.
