This committee will hold its first meeting at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 12, in the Georgia 6 room on the 1st floor. The Director of Rituals, Ed D'Avignon, and some District Directors will serve as advisors to this group. The Director of Rituals will preside over the opening meeting and will ask the group to select the chair, who must be an appointed member of your committee and an official Convention voting delegate.
Your chair will present the committee's first report to the Convention in the Second Business Meeting on Friday afternoon. Additional time has been set aside in the Third Business Meeting on Saturday morning for final action on the report and recommendations. This committee is responsible for informing the Convention of all background information it needs to act upon your report and recommendations. Please remember the room must be cleared of all non-members of Tau Beta Pi if the ritual is to be discussed.
The committee will set up the equipment for the formal Initiation in the Grand Ballroom on the 3rd floor. This is the same room where the Business Meetings will be held. Initiates should be lined up alphabetically in the Georgia 7 room on the 1st floor, so they will be seated in the proper order for the ceremony. Be certain that the list of initiates actually present matches the list used in the ceremony. Ensure that all engraved keys, certificates, chapter roll book, and lists of initiates are correctly prepared for use by the appropriate initiation team members.
The ritual team will consist of students, faculty, and Association Officials named by Director D’Avignon and Headquarters. Members of this committee will assist to ensure the smooth flow of candidates and the proper handling of all equipment and materials. The initiates are expected to include student candidates from GA Alpha.
Tau Beta Pi Bylaw I, Sec. 1.07, states that a model initiation shall be conducted at each Convention “with due formality and elegance for the instruction of the delegates.” The model initiation is intended to demonstrate proper performance, and your committee should emphasize to all delegates the vital importance of well-conducted chapter initiations. This event is the first formal introduction of new members to Tau Beta Pi. Facts and ideas are stated in the ritual that are fundamental to a proper understanding of Tau Beta Pi as an honor society. The attitude of the initiation team and the atmosphere of the ceremony must be tuned to the seriousness of the occasion—as the ritual, the Constitution, and past Conventions have intended. Therefore, the Executive Council requests the group to hold a formal practice ceremony on Friday morning or evening and to model the entire initiation.
A copy of Director D’Avignon’s annual report is included on the website.
