Protect

The fourth pillar of the Junior Water Walkers website is protect. You have built a connection and relationship with water. You have taken time to reflect. You respect water. How will you protect it?

I know no other stronger water protectors than Nokomis Josephine Mandamin-ba and her grand niece Autumn Peletier. Watch "The Anishinaabe Woman Who Walked for Water Rights". Simply put, Nokomis was an incredible woman who dedicated her life to protecting water. She "walked the talk" and walked over 25 000 km in her lifetime to bring awareness of the need to protect water.

Autumn Peletier is Nokomis' grand niece. She is a "Water Warrior", Anishinaabe water-rights advocate and Anishinabek Nation Chief Water Commissioner. She has taken up her auntie's quest to protect water. She is only 16 years old.

Joanne Robertson, author and illustrator, wrote the children's book "The Water Walker". It tells the story of how Nokomis came to take up her water work and how the Mother Earth Water Walkers came to be. The book brings to light Nokomis' strong connection and love for water. It teaches us how she often took time to reflect about the water and how she truy respected nibi. When asked by an ogima "What are you going to do about it (the water)", she thought for a long time...and then she walked. And walked. And walked.

For a limited time only, Joanne Robertson is sharing her reading of "The Water Walker" with YOU!

What are you going to do about it?

M.A.D for Water A M.A.D project is a "Make A Difference" project. How can YOU make a difference for the water. The M.A.D Project resource page guides students through the inquiry process with a focus on making a difference. Students start with a QUESTION, then RESEARCH and come up with an IDEA to make a difference. Students make a PLAN to put their idea into ACTION. Finally, students SHARE their work with others. Feel free to use, adapt, modify and share.
