In the spring of 2018 Mr.Cameron, four other teachers from Canada and the United States and his grade 5/6 students were working on a Google Earth Voyageur story titled "Blue Gold", a virtual field trip which would take kids on an epic journey around the five Great Lakes. You can only imagine Mr.Cameron's surprise when he crossed paths with an incredible woman who had walked around the Great Lakes! Mr.C invited Nokomis Josephine Mandamin Ba and Joanne Robertson, author of "The Water Walker" to his class for a visit.
Nokomis was thrilled and inspired by the power of technology to help teach children about the world and we were simply awe struck by Nokomis and her quest to walk for water. Water (nibi) had connected us and my students vowed to become "Junior Water Walkers", to take up Nokomis' quest to do something for the water.
Since our fateful meeting in 2018 a lot has transpired. Sadly, Nokomis passed away on February 22, 2019 but classes of Junior Water Walkers from around the globe helped continue her water work, each in their own small way. The global pandemic struck in March 2020, but that hasn't stopped the Junior Water Walkers from asking: "What are we going to do about it?"
This website is dedicated to helping students develop and strengthen their connection to water, themselves and others. As that connection becomes stronger it is hoped that students will take time to reflect, come to respect and eventually protect not only water, but themselves and others.
