What is AI?
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence.
AI is a program that works by processing large amounts of training information, it then analyses the information to make decisions and predictions. When using a chatbot the chatbot takes your questions or statements and using its prior knowledge and skill makes a response by gathering information and structuring it. Using this technique chatbots can create lifelike responses to text through machine learning and training. This leads to our fertile question, if AI is able to write like a human then, How should AI use be managed in school and workplace environments?
A.I has evolved many times throughout the years, though was it for the better and has it been the best choice for the future? A.I wasn't able to be created back in 1949 because computers lacked a key for intelligence; they weren't able to store commades only execute them so they would only do what was told and wasn't able to remember what they did. Second computers were expensive in the 1950s, renting a computer cost $200,000 a month. 5 years later they had a conference to decide if it was a good decision and they ended up trying it they were also funded by a corporation called R.A.N.D and they help start the next 20 years of research to create A.I into what it is today though they had a lot of problems that would stun the growth but they pulled through and would be successful in creating a prototype that would help make it what it is today. So now A.I is all over the place bringing new stuff like Chat Gpt and inspiring other companies to create their own A.I like Google who has created Google Bard so who knows what may come next.
AI is constantly improving and changing and as of now it is changing at unprecedented speeds. About 44 percent of companies are serious about investing in AI and want to integrate it into their businesses. AI is becoming more serious because it has the ability to analyse large data sets and make decisions or predictions using its learned intelligence much faster than humans can. As we rely on AI more we could use it for multitudes of different tasks this could lead to a risk of privacy. If we are feeding AI chatbots information it needs to help us, it could store the data and big tech companies could have access to it. Just imagine a company uses a chatbot to help with their finances, managing meetings etc . The owners of the chatbots could now have access to that information meaning that they could basically have power over the company as they now know everything that is happening, good and bad for the company. As AI needs to use data to help it adapt and keep improving it will be hard for regulations to be just right so they prevent breach of privacy without slowing the improvements of AI.
Another issue with AI is bias. Although it is thought that AI is unbiased as it is just an algorithm, AI can be biassed because the information it is relying on may be biassed and the people who program it can alter its bias. One type of bias is called data bias, this is when the information used to develop the AI is unreliable. This can be if it is incomplete, misleading or just incorrect information. The second type of bias is societal bias, this is when AI inadvertently gains assumptions and biases from the people who programmed the AI. One example of this was when Amazon tried to create an AI to review job applications by looking at statistics of a 10 year period. Over this 10 year period men held more jobs in the tech industry than women so the AI taught itself that women were less capable of the jobs, the AI then gave a lower rating to resumes that stated the applicant went to an all girls school or mentioned the word women’s as in women’s chess club captain.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of AI?
Whilst there are some risks with AI it also has many advantages.
AI is capable of doing many things and will most likely be able to do more in the future.
Some advantages of AI are:
AI can reduce time needed to perform tasks
AI doesn’t take breaks so it can work 24/7
AI can reduce human error
AI will create new jobs
AI can be used for new inventions
AI has much faster decision making than humans
AI has proven to be very quick at performing tasks so it will be useful for reducing long tasks.
AI will provide many opportunities for new jobs. Some new jobs have already been created since the rise in popularity in AI. 5 of these jobs are prompt engineer, AI trainer, AI auditor, AI ethicists and machine managers. We will describe these in question 4.
AI is capable of doing work in many different fields. AI will be used innovatively in different fields for new inventions and uses.
AI has much faster decision making than humans this could be useful in dangerous situations where quick thinking and analyses is needed.
Disadvantages and dangers of AI.
Some disadvantages of AI are.
Expensive
Lacks creativity
Worries around unemployment
Humans becoming lazy
AI doesn’t have morals or ethics
AI does not have real emotions
AIs are only capable of what they are programmed to do.
AI is very costly as it needs a large amount of time and resources. It also requires bleeding edge hardware and software to keep up to date and be up to standard.
AI is unable to think creatively or imagine things like humans can. This means that things created and written by AI will seem off or different because they are not created quite like a human would create something.
Unemployment. A lot of people are worried about unemployment and AI taking their jobs. This is true to a degree but we believe that there will always be jobs that require humans as AI can’t do them the same way as a human could.
Humans are becoming lazy. As AI is capable of doing repetitive and tedious tasks it is possible that people will use their brains less therefore making us lazy.
It can be difficult to incorporate ethics and morals into AI. This could lead to potential problems in the future e.g. an AI police officer taking the lives of all criminals as it thinks that will stop all crime.
AI doesn’t have real emotions. Whilst AI is able to accurately imitate emotion it cannot feel emotions. This means that humans could be at risk if an AI wanted to do bad things because they would not feel emotions and therefore not care about endangering people.
AI cannot currently evolve or develop without the help of humans. This means that they are only capable of what they know how to do and are programmed to do.
A.I could be used to help businesses for the right things like plans or budgeting. While also creating jobs for people who need them and when it comes to it. As we talked about before some new careers have arisen from AI. A prompt manager is one of these jobs, their job is to give the AI effective prompts that not only give them good results but also help train the AI. Another job is an AI trainer. An AI trainer is someone who trains the AI to have the necessary skills and knowledge to respond in its designated field.
The third job is an AI auditor. Their job is to manage accuracy and bias as much as possible in AI so that the results are more factual and correct. The penultimate job is an AI ethicist/Ethics expert. The AI ethicists job is to make sure that AI is used correctly in an ethical and safe manner.
The last job is a machine manager. AI is also about robots so their job is to oversee robots that utilise AI.
Short answer yes but in a managed way like only used for brainstorming and writing structures which could help improve a lot of students grades though it would be hard to manage this because students would do what they are doing now and just copy and paste everything. This would make it hard for teachers to know whether or not a child's work is his or A.I this would make it difficult for teachers to grade someone properly.so there are alot of pros and cons to chat gpt but the most important is that there is a lot of knowledge at our fingertips but the con is that it could be used to just get answers and copy them as yours.
AI is a large technology so it will be hard to manage. We think the three main ways we can control AI are banning it completely, managing the use of it e.g. restricting it for certain purposes and people or making it free reign.
Banning it completely would be an easy way to manage AI use in school and workplace environments because students would learn useful skills and employees would have to do their work. We don’t think this is the answer though because if we ban it completely we could lose a lot of development and useful things that could come from AI like creating new ideas in the classroom and assisting with time straining tasks in the workplace. Banning it completely would be a bad idea because if it is used correctly AI can be a very helpful tool and we would be losing lots of opportunities for advancements in technology, the classroom and the workplace.
Making it free reign. Whilst making AI free reign would have its benefits like being able to use it for anything you can desire there would be many disadvantages and drawbacks. If AI was free reign a large majority of students would just use chatbots like chatGPT to do their work. Even though AI could be very useful in the workplace and classroom if it was free reign we don’t think it would be beneficial to trust students and employees with little or no management. As this could result in no one ever doing their work and just using AI.
This leads us to our third and best option: managing and restricting the use of AI. If we manage the use of AI in the workplace and classroom the students and employees can use it sometimes to help them with their work whilst still maintaining the capability for them to work independently. This option is the best of both worlds as it would restrict it just enough to be able to still use it while not becoming reliant on it. Whilst this is the best option there are still some disadvantages such as not being able to use the full capabilities of AI, AI would potentially develop slower as it would be used less and people might still find ways to use it for the wrong reasons. One study from Stanford University found “that attempts to regulate AI in general would be misguided, since there is no clear definition of AI (it isn’t any one thing), and the risks and considerations are very different in different domains.”
In conclusion AI is a very helpful tool that may be very useful now and in the future but because it is so powerful it has dangers and downsides. This is why we think it should be managed so that we can stay safe and still make the most of this useful technology.
