Theory:
This unit focuses on using visual language to communicate messages, ideas and concepts. This involves acquiring and applying design thinking skills as well as drawing skills to make messages, ideas and concepts visible and tangible. Through experimentation and through exploration of the relationship between design elements and design principles, students develop an understanding of how design elements and principles affect the visual message and the way information and ideas are read and perceived.
Practical:
The focus will be on developing students’ ability to represent three-dimensional form using a variety of drawing methods. Students will learn the importance of and develop the skills for drawing; from direct observation using one-point, two-point perspective, isometric, planometric and orthogonal and rendering techniques,and use the design process to produce visual communications to satisfy a stated purpose.

CAT 1:
Use drawing as a means of communication
Observational drawings
Apply different materials and media to render drawings to enhance form and surface texture
Develop one-point and two-point perspective drawings
Develop Isometric drawings
Develop Planometric and Orthogonal drawings
CAT 2:
Understand different types of design Industrial Design, Environmental Design and Communication Design.
Evaluate the forms and styles of visual communication designs from different historical, social and cultural contexts
Evaluate the use of drawing conventions and methods by designers from different times and places at different stages of the design process
Analyse the effective use of materials, methods and media in communicating ideas to targeted audiences
CAT 3:
Understand and apply the design process in a folio of work
Analyse visuals using the design conventions through research
Apply design elements and principles in the design process
Experiment with materials and media
Develop and refine visual communications
Produce a refined visual communication
