The MPE will become available one month before your NSC. You will receive an email alert with a link once it is available.
Students need to take their MPE before their New Student Conference (NSC) and they can take the MPE online, no registration is required. The proctored MPE is done online through Canvas using Respondus Monitoring. When students log into the Canvas, they will be automatically directed to an MPE.
All incoming students have access to the MPE on Canvas, but not all students are required to take the exam. If your degree plan requires MATH 147, 151, or 171, then you are required to take the MPE. If your degree plan requires MATH 142, you should only take the MPE if you do not need to take MATH 140 at TAMU. Most transfer students satisfy the requirement by transferring in coursework to meet the Core Curriculum requirement of six credit hours.
Students must take the proctored MPE before their NSC date. Advisors need the score on the MPE to help students register for classes, so students must make sure they take the exam before attending their NSC. The MPE will become available one month before your NSC. You will receive an email alert with a link once it is available. If your NSC is after July 10, we ask that you please complete your first attempt before then.
Once available, students taking the MPE must:
Navigate to canvas.tamu.edu
Login using their NetID and password
On their dashboard, they should automatically be directed to the appropriate MPE based on their major.
If your MPE doesn't show up on the platform, please contact math-placement@tamu.edu to update your account.
Students can take the MPE a total of two times with make-up exams opening July 1 for the fall semester and January 1 for the spring semesters with a required two week waiting period between attempts. Makeup exams are available until the first week of class each semester. The highest MPE score will be used for placement purposes.
You are only allowed to take or retake the MPE if you have never attempted MATH 140 or MATH 150, as those are the course prerequisites for the Calculus courses.
