Over the past two years at the Bush School, I have served on the Public Service Organization (PSO) with the Elder Aid committee and as the PSO Treasurer and through this service I have learned even more about how important and special it is to be able to give back to my local community. Part of my involvement as a second-year team lead involved me planning and organizing an event with the local organization, Elder Aid. Elder Aid is a nonprofit organization that serves the low-income elderly in the Brazos Valley and aims to minimize the stress the elderly face as they cope with struggles to find affordable housing, loneliness, health and wellness, the loss of loved ones, and inadequate funding for basic needs. With this committee, I helped organize multiple events including a Christmas wrapping event in 2018, an ornament decorating party with the tenants in 2019, and a donation sign-up sheet for 16 tenants for the organization’s annual “Adopt an Elder” event. My first year consisted of me creating PowerPoint presentations and being in charge of recruitment efforts for our events. During my second year, I was able to play a more active role in brainstorming new event ideas, facilitating these new events, and being the main contact with the organization. This has led our committee in PSO to have a more actively engaged interaction with Elder Aid then they have been in years past. Additionally, I hope the leadership experience I have encountered this year as a team lead can be motivating for the future leaders next year to continue to have an active and engaging relationship with the organization.
This experience led me to learn more about what is going on in the community outside of the university and that there are many ways to give back. Before my involvement in PSO and Elder Aid, I was not fully aware of the nonprofits located in the Bryan/College Station area and this experience has led me to alter my career path. Volunteering with Elder Aid and being able to facilitate events with the organization has been a fulfilling experience that reiterates my interest in local government. I originally came to graduate school with a path toward federal or state government, but this experience has been one of a few that have pushed me to look for ways I can become more involved in my community and to pursue a career in municipal government. This experience has also opened my eyes to how many amazing individuals there are in this community, committed to helping the low-income elderly in the county.
