I was chosen in Summer 2019 to be a graduate assistant of research (GAR) for Dr. Kalena Cortes. This past year I have worked on various projects with Dr. Cortes, analyzing education policy at a pre-K, elementary, high school, and university level. As of 2020 I joined her research team on Texts4Teens and have aided in the text message curriculum development, survey development and analysis, and I am currently working on creating the project's website. Although I am graduating in May 2020 and will no longer be a GAR, Dr. Cortes has asked me to remain on her research team and work as a project manager for Texts4Teens part-time after I graduate.
While at The Cato Institute I worked directly with Senior Fellow, Michael Tanner, in the Poverty and Social Welfare Department. During my time at The Cato Institute, I researched current legislation and policies that impact the poor in California and analyzed relevant Census data. I strengthened my research and communication skills by searching for nonprofit organizations in California that shared a similar mission, building connections, and scheduling meetings for Michael Tanner's multiple trips to California. I also analyzed appropriations and senate bills relating to affordable housing, criminal justice reform, deregulation, and education.
As a general manager at CalFit Manteca, my main duties included extracting data to compile reports on sales, financial, and billing data and controlling all financial transactions and generate monthly and yearly reports. I was also responsible for handling all billing complaints and discrepancies and managing all collections through direct contact and also through 3rd party. At CalFit, I developed a new method for tracking and recording collection efforts, which gained positive recognition from the gym owner, Steve, and has been used by employees since I have left the organization. The new procedures I developed included the creation of a collections worksheet and an online tracking sheet to monitor who has been contacted, how many days they were past due, who has been sent to collections, and an easier way to monitor all of the data than the previous methods used before. My other responsibilities included communicating with outside companies for facility maintenance, administering the preparation of weekly payroll, and managing all data entry into the main billing system and resolve any customer issues regarding accounts.
In 2017 I was referred by my previous professors, Dr. Jasek-Rysdahl and Dr. Shrader, to tutor economics for the university. As a tutor, I specialized in tutoring econometrics, macroeconomics, and microeconomics and my primary responsibilities included identifying student needs, providing academic guidance, and assessing student performance on a weekly basis. Throughout the school year, I tutored six students, which allowed me to devote more time to each student outside of our weekly session. Aside from our in-person meetings, I created and provided weekly lesson plans and practice problems for the students I tutored and I developed practice exams around midterm and finals.
