The KIA ORA values at Takaka Primary are the foundations that both underpin and uphold our school culture. These are clearly linked to both the Key Competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum and the TPS KIA ORA Kids Qualities (Graduate Profile), which are benchmarked for Junior, Middle and Senior students. Our school values and qualities are taught and caught explicitly, and woven into learning. We believe that the curriculum starts as soon as students enter the gate of our school, and as such our values and qualities permeate all school activities.
In the early school years, student exposure to technology is limited, as we believe that students require rich opportunities to connect with others and build relationships, self-worth, and learning power through play. The focus on relationships and communication is paramount, and this is developed through experiential learning and play. As students progress, the focus on relationships and communication continues, and technological tools are introduced intentionally as a way to enhance connections: “People, Places, Tools and Interactions”. Chromebooks are used as a tool to access and support learning from Year 3 onwards. Digital Citizenship and online safety is prioritised and taught in modules from Year 1-6, as part of “Keeping Ourselves Safe”.
