At TPS we recognise that Science, Social Science, Technology and Digital Technology all weave together to create meaningful learning experiences and contexts for students, and as such the skills and objectives of the curriculum are taught in an integrated manner. We also recognise the uniqueness and importance of each curriculum area and will prioritise a focus on each area from time to time to ensure that deep learning takes place.
The learning areas fit together so well because they relate to our lives and our world in past, present and future thinking! We also recognise the value of using these curriculum areas to engage students in purposeful learning in literacy and mathematics, as well as having authentic opportunities to teach the 4C's of 21st Century learning: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Critical Thinking. These four key skills, taught through collaborative and reciprocal learning activities, encourage our students to develop as connected, collaborative, life long learners who actively engage in their environments.
Social Science is represented by concepts, which are broad and are not interpreted as achievement objectives. At TPS, we select wide ranging inquiry themes that span multiple terms, and have social sciences or science as either a minor or major focus. Teachers collaboratively plan and then individualise the learning to meet their students’ needs, by firstly igniting interest and then drawing on this to create learning activities that follow student interests, whilst also teaching the skills of the curriculum. Teachers are encouraged to follow their students’ lines of inquiry, and respond appropriately by activating deeper learning through well thought out opportunities to explore, ask questions, test and form new knowledge.
