At Level 1-2 of the curriculum, kaiako use the learning progressions (LPF) for Mathematics, Reading, Writing and Te Reo Māori to guide their planning and ensure they meet the needs of all students through authentic, localised curriculum contexts. The emphasis is on core skills required by students to successfully access the curriculum. Curriculum areas are integrated and woven through the core curriculum, being taught in an incidental and and explicit ways where appropriate. Each class plans to meet student interests, needs and abilities, and as such, this varies through time. Learning through play is a fundamental aspect of the junior curriculum; building in opportunities for students to explore the key competencies and the KIA ORA Kid Qualities (graduate profile).
At Level 3-4 of the curriculum, core skills are continually developed, with an increased emphasis on project based learning and student led inquiry, whilst ensuring that student needs and curriculum coverage is achieved. There is an added emphasis on strand Mathematics, as well as a more structured focus on teaching and learning the different features of text types with written language.
In both the junior and the senior stages, student workshops are designed to engage learners with interesting content and delivery, to ensure that skills are developed in collaboration with others.
