Tahoma High School Health and Fitness Courses
Foundations of Health and Fitness introduces all students to a variety of lifetime health and fitness activities in a year-long course. Students build a foundation for lifelong wellness by acquiring and developing knowledge, strategies and transferable skills necessary for adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Themes of responsible decision-maker and goal setting run through the course. This is the first 1.0 credit taken within high school health and fitness.

Individual and Partner sports is a physical education elective focusing on a variety of individual and partner sports that students can engage in throughout their lives. These may include disc golf, tennis and badminton. Students learn rules, strategy, etiquette, proper care of equipment, safety and teamwork. Additionally, there is an emphasis on personal wellness and healthy choices. This course is repeatable for credit.

Team Sports is a physical education elective focusing on a variety of team sports that students can engage in throughout their lives. Sports may include soccer, football, basketball and volleyball. Rules, strategy, etiquette, proper care of equipment and teamwork are all a focus. Additionally, there is an emphasis on personal wellness and healthy choices. This course is repeatable for credit.

Group Fitness is a physical education elective course offered to students interested in improving their overall health and fitness. Current group fitness trends focusing on increased balance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance and strength will be explored. These activities may include yoga, AMRAPS, Tabata, and other circuit training styles. This course is designed to promote self-esteem and challenge students at their individual level. Additionally there is an emphasis on personal wellness and healthy choices. This course is repeatable for credit.

Yoga is a physical education elective that creates a supportive and non-competitive atmosphere where students can learn and grow. All experience levels are welcome. Each person experiences the positive mental and physical effects of consistent yoga practice. Yoga challenges and enriches students by allowing them to improve their flexibility, strength and cardiovascular conditioning. Additionally, there are lessons focused on mindfulness with an emphasis on personal wellness and healthy choices. This course is repeatable for credit.

Dance is a physical education elective that focuses on a variety of dance styles. Students explore dance from various decades and cultures. No dance experience is required. Students with dance experience are encouraged to share their knowledge and skills through leadership opportunities. Additionally, there is an emphasis on personal wellness and healthy choices. Strength and Conditioning is a physical education elective that teaches sound lifting techniques, proper training principles and effective fitness training. Students develop a daily fitness program that fits their own personal needs and training level. These programs promote self-esteem, cultivate self-discipline and improve strength, flexibility, speed and endurance. Students set goals and are evaluated on their effort, active participation and ability to meet academic, skill and fitness standards. Additionally, there is an emphasis on personal wellness and healthy choices. This course is repeatable for credit.

Outdoor Recreation is a physical education elective that familiarizes students with a variety of lifetime activities (i.e. rock climbing, fly fishing and hiking). Students also acquire, analyze and apply knowledge and skills related to these activities to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle now and into the future. Students are expected to supply clothing and shoes necessary to participate in activities. Additionally there is an emphasis on personal wellness and healthy choices. This course is repeatable for credit.

The purpose of this course is for general education students to grow in knowledge, skills, and leadership within the content of Physical Education. They will do this through offering support and mentoring for students with disabilities in their Adapted Physical Education Class. Activities could include team sports, individual sports, foundational movement and fitness skills, and rhythm activities. Principles taught in this class will follow the state standards for Physical Education and students will be provided the opportunity to assist in the teaching of these standards. In this mentor role, the peer partner can be instrumental in helping students practice and master foundational skills that will support that student’s growth toward being future ready with regard to their personal wellness. Although this course is highly recommended for students who are interested in pursuing a career in education, any student who has interest and is recommended by their physical education teacher is encouraged to register. This course is repeatable for credit.

Exploring Leadership in Athletics is a semester-long physical education elective will help students develop as effective leaders and teammates. We will explore the following themes; leadership, sport psychology, nutrition for performance, and pathways to coaching and officiating. Learning experiences will be a blend of physical activity and classroom-based opportunities. Some examples are student-led sport skills clinics, guest speakers, coaching and officiating opportunities, and developing community partnerships.

Advanced Strength and Conditioning, a physical education elective, is a rigorous course for experienced and motivated students that focuses on functional and dynamic strength training and speed development. Students develop power, speed, agility and balance through Olympic lifts. Individualized training programs enhance athletic performance and take into account sports-specific skills. Student success is supported through fitness training, high performance nutrition and leadership development. Additionally there is an emphasis on personal wellness and healthy choices. This course is repeatable for credit.

Outdoor Academy combines Honors Environmental Science, English 10, Health & Fitness and stewardship. Students participate in fly fishing, mountain biking, hiking/orienteering, rock climbing and numerous stewardship activities, opening doors to environmental learning. Large group experiences provide opportunities for relationship-building, a key goal in this program. The academic goals focus on preparing students for a challenging high school schedule and for college.
