Animal Science is a year-long science course for students who are interested in the animal industry. This course is a Lab Science CADR. Through this course we will explore the topics of animal domestication, animal body systems, nutrition, behavior, reproduction, and genetics. We will also explore each animal industry, such as the beef cattle industry, to learn more about each animal species. This class is intended to provide hands-on learning including working with different animal species and taking field trips around our community. Students in this course are eligible to join FFA. Membership is not required, but highly recommended. The course fee is $10

Interested in learning about the amazing world of plants? Do you want to get your hands dirty? Would you like to work on a sustainable farm while being a community contributor? This course is a Lab Science CADR/CTE course that checks all these boxes and more! You will learn practical skills and techniques in sustainable agriculture, plant propagation, plant identification, pruning and bonsai. You will learn local native and invasive plant species and participate in habitat restoration. Numerous field activities are required. We visit Elk Run Farm weekly during the fall and spring, we work with King County Parks monthly and we work at the Lake Wilderness Arboretum. A course fee of $25 covers materials and transportation. FFA club membership is encouraged.

Veterinary Science is a year-long course designed for students interested in the animal industry and pursuing a career in the veterinary field. This course is a Lab Science CADR. This course will focus on animal rights and welfare, diseases and parasites, animal handling, identifying a variety of breeds, and veterinary procedures. Students will become familiar with the tools and procedures used in the veterinary field. This course is intended to be a hands-on class where students will engage in a variety of activities and work with various animals. Students in this course are eligible to join FFA. Membership is not required, but highly recommended.

Metals 1 introduces metal working careers and basic welding and machining techniques. Students have the opportunity to tour the local industry, learn about metal working careers and learn MIG and TIG welding, as well as machining procedures. Student projects include hand tools and student-designed projects. Students learn and apply the 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) system used in industry. Students explore metal working careers and expand upon welding and machining techniques learned in Metals I while building personal and community projects. Design and fabricate solutions to real-world problems using welding and machining techniques learned in Metals 2. Students will work on teacher assigned personal projects, while learning advanced GTAW/ SMAW/ GMAW welding techniques, as well as advanced manual and CNC machining. A focus of this class will be on community projects, possibly including benches, bike racks, park signage, and other needs within Maple Valley. We will also visit local industry and postsecondary programs when possible to highlight future opportunities. Students will continue to use the 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) system used in industry. Dual credit for this course is available through Renton Technical College.
