The Duolingo English Test is a test to measure level of English language proficiency. It is similar to the TOEFL and IELTS in terms of the function. SYE provides Duolingo test waivers to SYE students and often has additional waivers for non-SYE students. Keep an eye on the Facebook group for more details about waivers.
Like any English proficiency test, acceptance depends on the university itself, but since the beginning of the pandemic, most universities around the world recognize the Duolingo English Test as an alternative for the TOEFL and IELTS. You can search the list of universities that accept the Test here: https://englishtest.duolingo.com/institutions.
The duration of the test is one hour, which is divided into:
5 minutes: preparing to run the exam, by making sure the hardware and the Internet are working and uploading an image of your passport.
45 minutes: the actual graded test, which consists of questions that measure the skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing in English .
10 minutes: a video interview and an essay, which are not graded.
Like other English tests there is no passing grade. It specifically depends on the universities and their requirements. We know that many of the most selective universities in America require a 130 minimum on the Duolingo exam. You can see Duolingo English test grades comparisons to other tests here: https://englishtest.duolingo.com/scores.
The test result is valid for two years starting from the day results are released.

The Duolingo Test measures the level of the English language proficiency and not the level of practice or techniques, and this means that the source from which you study for the test is not important as long as it strengthens your level in the English language in general.
We recommend taking the 15 minute, free practice test on the Duolingo English test website. We don’t recommend taking it more than 5-10 times as the questions start to repeat.
