This activity can be used with a school leadership team, a department or even a whole staff. It should take approximately sixty minutes to engage with all the tasks in each of the two learning activities. The content of this activity is based on the AITSL resource featuring Professor Alma Harris and is divided in two parts.

Part A
Explore the advantages of shared leadership
Establish the focus of this activity as exploring the advantages of shared leadership. View the video below, on shared leadership as an icebreaker.
1. Form groups of four to five people and then divide the whole group in two. Invite half of the group to answer the a. questions, and the other half, to answer the b. questions.

ii. Share any experiences of attempts at shared/distributed leadership that did not work.
iii. Why did they fail?
iv. What can be learned from the experience?
b. questions

iv. What can be learned from the experience?
2. Bring the whole group together.
3. One member of each a. group(s) is invited to share the group's responses. Repeat for the b. group(s). Record the main ideas on a board, large size paper, or digital board. (The Google presentation to the right can be used to record actions. Simply 'Make a copy' and share with participants).
Part B
Identify the advantages of shared leadership in light of the implications for practice in school
The final activity delves deeper into educational leadership. Tasks within the next activity invite participants to identify key aspects of educational leadership and prepare a pitch to persuade colleagues of the importance of their educational insight.
