Philadelphia FDC #5898 (Flat Bed Distribution Center) in Swedesboro
In the beginning stages of this process, our initial proposition was written out to someone in the Home Depot department. Once we were approved, Omar Lopez, Operations Manager, began working with us to determine exactly what materials we would need, how big the garden was going to be, and to get a good idea of our vision so that he could help us bring it to life.
In April 2023, we "broke ground" on Wings and Wonder Butterfly Garden. Members from Mr. Lopez's team all volunteered their time (even some coming to the school right after a long night shift at work!) to help us. They put the garden furniture and raised beds together, they dug out the start of our milkweed gardens, painted fences, dug holes for poles to be placed into, put a new liner in our pond and helped to beautify it, etc.
This was not just a one day job!!! Many hours were put into the planning and creating of this garden and we are all grateful for the volunteers of Home Depot FDC #5898, and espeically to Mr. Lopez!
Some of the amazing crew who volunteered their time to help us make our butterfly garden dreams come true.
Our students loved being a part of this process. Every one of the Home Depot volunteers made them all feel like they were helping and that they were a huge part of this process.
Ready to work - ready to get styled with Home Depot!
The students wanted to help too. Let's get to work.
One of the major items that Home Depot provided for us - a greenhouse!!
Snack break! Parents of the students volunteered to get SO much to keep everyone's bellies full! They provided hoagie trays, soft pretzels, snacks, caramelized popcorn, cupcakes, Gatorade, water, breakfast foods, etc. We were all so grateful for the parents too!!
Students were able to come out and work side by side with the Home Depot employees and learn all about painting, sanding, and digging in hard dirt!
Once the initial groundwork was completed, we needed some more help to make this garden what it is now. Our PTO helped to provide us with so many of the fun things you see out back: the garden swing and chairs, the raised garden bed that is home to our Zinnias, and much of the garden decorations. Best of all, they provided the funds for us to buy enclosures and materials so that classrooms at Harker can enjoy the magic of the Monarchs by having a chrysalis in their room to observe. Each Monarch chrysalis was taken as a caterpillar or egg right from our Wings and Wonder Garden!
Pictured here are students who are getting ready to deliver an enclosure with a Monarch chrysalis in it to classrooms throughout Harker School. Thanks to our PTO, we have plenty of materials and enclosures to be able to spread them around to many classrooms at Harker.
Two of the raised garden beds. One had milkweed in it, and the other had parsley. Parsley is one of the plants that Swallowtails lay their eggs on.
We caught a little butterfly seeking shelter in one of the butterfly houses.

Creating a butterfly garden has its set of challenges. One of those challenges is deer! After we purchased a whole flat of milkweed and planted it in the garden, the deer out back started getting interested. Not only did they hop the fence and check out our newly planted milkweed sprouts, they ate them!! Every single one of them in fact! After reaching out to New Moon Nursery explaining what happened and asking to purchase another flat, they donated one instead!! Our school is very grateful for this donation and allowed us to replant milkweed to provide food for the Monarch caterpillars.
Before planting our milkweed. You should see these plants in our garden now. They are all now over three feet high!!
This little Monarch caterpillar egg is about to emerge. You can tell because that little black dot at the top of the egg is actually the caterpillar's head.
Our students planted the milkweed in both milkweed gardens, as well as in the raised beds.
Our butterfly garden would not be what it is without our staff and administration, who has had a hand in every step of the process. Our secretaries and staff weeded the garden beds, our administrators beautified the pond and helped plan where all of our pollinator plants were going to go, our maintenance staff placed a sprinkler system in the garden beds (which has been a HUGE help!), and many staff members have offered to help with the planting, the watering, and the overall mainenence of the garden.
This is only a portion of our sprinkler system that was put in place by our hardworking maintenance staff. Look at that thriving milkweed! (Picture taken in the middle of the process)
They also helped by digging deep holes for our ten foot poles, which we are using for our butterfly homes.
Beyond grateful for our Harker family! Wings and Wonder Butterfly Garden wouldn't be what it is without all of their help!
