Here is where it all started! During an ELA lesson discussing ecosystems and rainforests, we read an article about Monarch butterflies and their huge decline in population.
From there stemmed the idea to create a butterfly garden at the Harker School. What started off as a plan and conversation, quickly turned into a written proposal, a garden blueprint, and lots and lots of research.
The students this year have left quite a legacy - a safe haven for the Monarchs. They should all be so proud of themselves for all they accomplished this school year.
Never enough milkweed!
The day we started our project
What a difference in just a couple of weeks.
We are excited to begin working on the greenhouse next school year
So. Many. Materials!
Many of the milkweed plants in our garden now started under a grow light in the classroom.
A group of students took time out of their free time to create to huge floor to ceiling milkweed mural in the 5th grade hallway.
Another group of students spent endless hours making beautiful bracelets to sell at the school store.
Some of the students used their incredible artistic talents to make these cardboard Monarch wings to provide for the perfect photo opportunity!
