Kachina are figures carved from cottonwood root by the Hopi people. They are given to children to identify various spirits representing hope, abundance and health. While we respect the art of the Hopi nation, we create our own version of a hopeful figure.

Art for the next few weeks. I hope you are taking some time to be creative during this stay-at-home time. Take pictures of your work no matter what it is. Are you building with Lego? Making chalk drawings on the sidewalk or driveway? Using cereal boxes to build wonderful things? Post a picture on Artsonia .com and don't forget to check out what your friends are making.
For today: We had to cut our clay unit short and I know that was disappointing. I was disappointed too. Here's a video of Cassie Stephens teaching her salt dough recipe. Don't forget to ask permission and use the things she suggests to keep your work surface clean. Once your art is dry then you can color it with markers. Post for us all to see.

Lots of choices here. I'll be looking for at least two or three examples from you on Artsonia by April 15.

Good afternoon from the online SWS art studio. I have a project for you that I think you might have fun with. This is my teacher friend, Cassie Stephens. She is kind of crazy and wild. I'm sure you'll enjoy her. The lesson can be found here:

You should have some things at home to do this. Don't worry if you don't have paint. Crayons work just fine. If you don't have rolls you can just draw the turrets.
When your castle is finished I am anxious to see them posted on Artsonia. Be sure to have your folks sign you up. I'd like to see some art on Artsonia. Due dates are going to be very flexible but I do want you to use some of your time for thinking about and making art. I'd like to see a few things posted by the end of April.
