The project can be anything they wish to create using a programming language of their choice (Python, Visual Basic, C#, PHP, SQL, JavaScript, HTML + CSS, Java, C++). They can start their research over the summer holiday and think about what project they want to do in Year 13. They can officially start from Sep straight after mock exams are done and the final deadline is the last week before the Easter holiday. Although they have about 2 terms, please bare in mind that they have mock exams in Sep and Jan. They also have their UCAS application, university interviews, entrance exams for Ox-bridge and Imperial applicants and various other commitments. So I would advice them to be organised and proactive for this project. They have to submit their evidence on the written document and show the demonstration/simulation on the recorded video.
Here are some of the projects that the past students have done in our school, just to give you some idea ...
Drone control with face detection system (very advance for A level project, photo above)
Boolean algebra calculator with K Map and Truth Table generator, (very advance for A level project, photo above)
Security door system with ID card that can operate remotely (the school now use this idea for all students and staff)
Sign language (ASL). Camera that detect hand gestures to tell the letter (very impressive, photo above)
Security CCTV camera that can record video and take photo using Raspberry Pi (like Ring)
Financial market analysis system that pull out online data with visual graph for investors
Foreign language translator that help you learn phrases and words with flash card
Using GPS via Bluetooth to track circuit lap times of racing cars (very impressive)
Talking robot that help your daily events/schedules (like Alexa or Siri)
Physic related simulation (solar system, aerodynamic for air craft)
Supermarket till checkout system with bar-code reader
Random maze generator with A* and Dijkstra algorithm
All sort of booking system for local taxi or cinema
All kind of computer games (Chess, Tetris, Space Invader, Card, etc) including online multiplayer game
Writing a phone app for gym work out, mental health, cooking recipe, book record, study/revision planner, etc
Some of these projects are absolutely incredible and they are more like university project than A level project. Most students do what they are interested to study further at university. E.g. if the student wants to do Math degree, he will do something relate to Math. If students want to Economic at university, his project will be financial related app. Same goes for Physics or Biology. If student is interested in Cyber Security, he/she will create security related project. For more information, please talk to our HoD (Mr Win).
