Careers in Computer Science
Our world is moving and changing rapidly. Demand in tech and science industries are getting higher every year and we don't have enough graduates in Computer Science to supply the demand. So keeping up the knowledge and skill in this fast developing field of technology is essential. It is not only about building apps that can help people in their everyday life or program that simulate how a virus spread inside a human body or system that predict the stock market, it is also a transferable skill sets to many other fields and careers.
Do you want to work in medical and science research, entertainment such as film and music, military, government, digital marketing, retails, social media, banking, transport, environment, energy, manufacturing, you name it. Nearly 70% of the movies in Hollywood uses some form of CGI and sound mixing. Do you know how much Computing power the military intelligent use? You can come up with your own innovative idea and start your own business like the Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos who graduated in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering degree from Princeton university or pursue your career in highly paid job in many industries. It does not necessarily have to be in computer/IT industries since every job nowadays will require some form of computer technologies, from drawing a car design in CAD software to manufacturing process. So there are wide variety of lucrative job and ever-growing career available in Computer Science.
There are two main careers in tech industry. Information Technology and Computer Science. IT is about installing, maintaining, and improving computer systems, operating networks, and databases. Meanwhile, Computer Science is about using mathematics to program systems to run more efficiently, including in design and development which is more technical than IT and more academically challenging but the reward is really great.
Typical Computer Science career will look like Programmer, Software Engineer, Game Developer, Web Designer, Network Manager and Database Administrator. Nowadays there are many other careers that link to other field such as Bioinformatics, Medical and science research, Stock market analysis, 3D modelling and animation, IT consultant, System analysis, Cyber security officer, Microprocessor engineer, VR designer, Product manager, Data scientist, Biotechnology, Artificial Intelligent (AI), Robotics engineer and the list goes on.
About 70-80% of our students carry on studying Computing related degree at Russell group universities every year including Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick, Durham, Exeter, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Bath. Some of our students went on to degree apprenticeship such as PWC, JP Morgan, Santander, Goldman Sachs, Pinewood Studio, QinetinQ and Thales.
A few of my students have come back to Borlase to inform me that they have already started working in high paid job in the IT industries and they enjoy what they do. Their feedback was mentally stimulating, interesting to solve problems and everyday is different. No regret whatsoever, glad that they took the subject and what they have learnt in 6th form was very helpful in their university and daily job which was good to hear. I have heard from some proud and happy parents giving me the good news whenever I see them around the school and I am so glad for their success beyond Borlase.
Back in 2021-22, we had 70% A*-A achievement for A level. The popularity of the subject here at Borlase is incredible. Students intake has grown to 30 in A level and about 60 in GCSE. Last year 2023-24, we achieved 68% A*-A achievement for A level and ranked number 1 out of 13 grammar schools in Buckinghamshire.
