On Thursday September 5th, the middle school trekked up to Holland Falls for lunch and a few pictures. The landscape was absolutely surreal and incredibly beautiful. The middle school does this every fall and it has become a tradition of a sort at Swan River. Places we've been to in the past were Mount Aeneas, Strawberry lake, and a few places in Glacier Park. The hike is a way for the teachers to get to know the new sixth graders and the new teachers. It also gives the kids a chance to spend time outside of the classroom and get some exercise. We ended the day with a refreshing quick swim.
Sixth grader Chloe stated, "We do the fall hike to exercise and to have fun with each other and get to know each other."
We hope to continue this tradition for years to come. It truly helps us realize how incredibly lucky we are to live in big sky country.
This fall, a contest was posted on the Readworks website. It’s as if fate had called Swan’s own student, Kennady forward. After weeks of reading and pounding the keys like a hammer, her story were submitted. In late November, Mrs. Burchwell received an email. Kennady had made the final 15, out of 5,460 entries!
Last year, Readworks had published a thriller for middle schoolers far and wide. The tale depicted the life of two boys as they left their home to survive a zombie apocalypse. They had two other kids join them later in the story. Dennis and Mack, the two main characters, raced against time as their friend slowly turned into a zombie. Unfortunately, the ending was terrible. Period. This did not sit well with anyone, so Readworks wanted a change. They had found the perfect opportunity for a contest. The winner would have their story published, and major bragging rights.
When asked her initial thoughts on seeing her name on the website, Kennady replied, “Yeah, I screamed, jumped up and down, just like any excited person would do. I was completely shocked. Just wow!”
Students in Creative Writing elective class all had the opportunity to write a new ending. Three took the challenge. These students included, a seventh grader Brodie, and me. In the end, Kennady did not end up in the top three, but we are so proud of her amazing accomplishment.
The Middle school Dance was a huge event that happened November 22, 2019 at 6:00-8:00 pm in the Swan River School gym. There were only middle schoolers in attendance. The chaperones were Mr. Congdon and Jenai Elhajj.
The Dance occured because of the amazing middle school Dance Committee. Kennady and Nevaeh from seventh grade put out a sheet for others to join. It was glow in the dark theme. There were donations from the Party Store, Ferndale Market and Brandy Lott helped us as well.
