On November 8, the Ferndale firefighters were burning their ways into students' hearts. Fire Safety is a Swan River School tradition to teach the importance of fire prevention. The firefighters and first responders bring their fire trucks, ambulances, and sometimes an Alert helicopter to teach the kids about safety and give advice on what to do when a fire breaks out or an emergency occurs.
As Mr. Bunker, the principal of Swan River School put ir, “It’s important to teach kids about fire safety because it’s my job to keep the staff and kids safe.”Mr. Bunker is required to do 8 emergency drills each year. Then, Ferndale brings fire and emergency vehicles and lets the kids tour them. They also show off the water hose and the fire suits. Students have even watched the high story ladder launched far into the air. Some years, firefighters demonstrate the "jaws of life" on broken desks.
Mr. Clark, Swan River School’s new eighth-grade teacher, is continuing an extremely helpful program. The organization is called Student Council. Each class of the middle school (also including fifth grade) vote among themselves for two representatives, who will meet up with the other representatives every other Friday. In the meetings, the welfare of the school will be considered. If a fixable problem is uncovered, students will find the answer together.
Students of the middle school are encouraged to promote their problems to the members so as to be discussed during the meetings. Mr. Clark told me why he continued the Student Council, “The eighth grade teacher before me did it, so I feel like it’s my duty.”
The Student Council created the fundraiser of $1 For Friday Hat Day (see the fundraising page for more information.)
We find that this small community has much potential. Certainly, there will be fewer complaints from students, and the school will become better with the actions and input by students for students.
