Units of Study:

We follow HMH's Into Reading Curriculum. The curriculum is organized into thematic units that develop literacy skills and explore essential questions through reading and writing across multiple genres. 

• Unit 1 - A New Home 

• Unit 2 - Inventors at Work

• Unit 3 - What a Story 

• Unit 4 - Above, Below, and Beyond 

• Unit 5 - Unexpected, Unexplained

• Unit 6 - The Lives of Animals

Grading:

Assignments are leveled based on the depth of knowledge the assignment requires to demonstrate understanding of a topic. Term grades will be based on several scores in each leveled category. 

Level 1 Assignments: 20% of final grade

• Checks for understanding of a given lesson.

• Examples:  Classwork and homework.

• Note: Homework will consist of reading at home,  weekly vocabulary work, finishing classwork, and periodic long-term projects and assignments.

Level 2 Assignments: 35% of final grade

• Checks for understanding throughout the duration of a unit.

• Examples: Quizzes, small writing assignments.

Level 3 Assignments: 45% of final grade

• Requires critical thinking and application to demonstrate understanding of a topic.

• Examples: Major writing assignments, projects, tests.
