Surrealism is a movement in art and literature that is aimed at expressing imaginative dreams and visions free from conscious rational control. Grade 8 painted surreal watercolors to send a message to their audience through symbolism and juxtaposition.

What Social Media is Doing to us
What do we do when we open our phones? Look at Social Media. We open apps such as Instagram, Tik Tok, Snapchat and so much more. We open these apps and all we do is compare ourselves to other people and tell ourselves “you are not good enough”. But this sentence we tell ourselves is inevitable because there is always someone better than us. Also, because of social media, we think that people with money can get themselves everything they want. But, we don’t realise that money can't buy love. It can buy happiness, but that is temporary, we will stop being happy after a new model or product comes out. We need to stop doing this, or our lives will get ruined.Gabe
FLY HIGH
Whenever I am upset or stressed, I play basketball or volleyball, and then I tend to become happier and more cheerful after playing. This inspired my artwork because I love how sports can make people happier and also helps cheer them up. Therefore, my artwork does express my personality. I decided to use a hot air balloon because hot air balloons help people fly above the ground. I then added different types of sports balls attached to a hot air balloon basket making the sports ball the hot air balloon. The hot air balloons represent happiness and joy sports give us. Let’s go and fly high.Naman
Escape
Violence causes innocent bystanders and children to become more inhumane and serves as a form of trauma - fueling their depression, anxiety, and emotions in a negative manner. Children are influenced/affected easily by the experiences they experience while growing up; war often drags them down assures a high chance of one not experiencing a normal childhood. I was originally going to devise a message from the statement above but instead ended up coming up with an idea for a short story that reflects the statement above to accompany my digital artwork. The title that I have given this work is “Escape”. The reason I chose this title was because of the story I was trying to tell through this artwork of the child who had his childhood taken away since his house was in a warzone. This child wishes for a chance to escape to somewhere away from all the current warfare, escape to a world of peace.Gisela
A Glimpse of Memory
Every single soul has memories. Whether it’s pleasant and wonderful, or dark and petrifying. However, just like everyone else’s, memories can not be changed. In my artwork, “A glimpse of Memory” expresses the feeling of being able to replay a moment or event but is not able to change a single part of it. Personally, I am the type of person who always seems to regret the tiny details that had happened in the past. Therefore, the artwork’s intention is to convey a message that although we don't have the ability to change the past, we can always reflect on the regrets and make use of the time we have in the present to make sure that the mistake or problems in the past won’t occur again.Shin
Untitled
My artwork is trying to tell you about don’t giving someone power of control. Sometime, I saw that some students are compliant with their friends. At that time, I was feeling they were poor and I wanted to reduce that number as much as possible. That's why I drew this picture.Aidan
Pretend
Almost every week, I can sense an incident where a person is faking their smile, whether he or she just didn’t have a good day or whether they had personal problems, it is quite obvious to see if you are faking your smiles. I am trying to show them that they shouldn’t fake their smiles and just show their raw emotion because the people around them will accept them and help them out and if they keep pretending, it will harm them. In this artwork, there were a few pieces of symbolism. The main one was the mask, the mask was used to create a vibe where everything and everyone is covered up and hiding who they really are. With the mask, the audience can understand the painting more and also the deeper meaning behind it. Show people your real emotions, they will be accepting and will help you.Ashley G
Long-awaited Dream
My dream has always been really straightforward. I have always wanted to go to a good college and be successful. My intention was to portray a dream-like atmosphere with some real life objects. The message that I am trying to express is that no matter what your dream is, you can achieve it if you work hard to reach it.Evelyn
The Good Old Days
Technology has taken the reins of our daily life. From looking at your phones the first thing in the morning to watching until late at night. It’s no secret that technology has been a catalyst for innovation and change for the past decades but with technology, we also succeed in putting a mask of ourselves in social media and getting carried away by likes and numbers rather than the true meanings of life. I hope through my surrealist artwork, I can remind people about the things we live for, the art, the words, music, family, friends, and many more. These are the things that will grant you freedom and create a wonderful meaning for your life, away from the blue screens. Tell me, when was the last time you truly felt alive?Matthew P
Overtaken
Technology is taking over us human beings, and every single day, it is affecting each and every one of us. This is the message that I am trying to send through forms of symbolism in my art piece. The majority of people stay home just to play games and watch, and this is making it so that people are not recognizing the beauty of nature. By sending this message, I hope that people would be more self-conscious when using forms of technology, and start to spend more time with family and do other social activities.Phoebe
In My World
Almost everyday I watch youtube, I think youtube is one of my energy sources. The pictures in the surreal work are the source of my energy, there are the foods I like, my dog that gives me happiness and swimming that I enjoy to help with my body health. The message I want to express in the piece of work is that, all of the things in the main picture are the things I like and the things that I enjoy, I want to share the source of my happiness to other people.Gary
The Badminton Tears
Badminton is my favorite hobby, however, due to this COVID-19 situation, I can not go out and play badminton anymore, so through this artwork, I want to tell the emotion that I have which is sad. In this artwork, I used a lot of components that we can find in the badminton field to show how much I love badminton.Matthew J
Me
This artwork describes myself in great detail by using drawings to implicitly convey my own personality. In my artwork, I drew a body which shows that it is me. When zoomed in, the head has a brain with certain segments and texts which describes what my main thoughts are most of the time, my hobbies, etc. When zoomed in even closer, it shows a mountain I took over the holidays (Mt. Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain over 3700m in elevation) with my face at the bottom. This gives symbolism of my ambition, as climbing a tall, steep mountain is an ambitious challenge/task.Juan

My Dreamworld
"Dreams is full of mystery and magic… Do not try to understand them."Roald Dahl, The BFGEveryone dreams some forget and some don’t. Dreams differ for everyone, some have abstract dreams, some have realistic dreams while some have surreal dreams. What would a glimpse in your dream world look like? Personally, I always imagined my dream world to look surreal. I always thought of it as something funky, fun and ‘me’. By ‘me’ I mean my likes, things I think of, and who am I as a person. Therefore, my artwork mostly focuses on how I imagine my dream world to be.K
Days in the Farm
In my artwork, I intended to juxtapose the products that we drink, eat and use in our daily lives to show where they originally came from. Exploitation is the word I convey within the image. Although we might not realise it, many trees have been cut down for paper, chickens raised in farms only to lay eggs and cows for milk and leather. Yet, we waste these valuable things because we throw away paper carelessly, as seen in the crumpled papers scattered about. All these products amount to money, as money comes and goes, like flying birds. By being more aware of the things happening around us, we can help lessen the harsh effect on the animals by simply not wasting the products.Jason
Shoot For Your DREAMS
I have always had fun when playing basketball and I have always wished that I would always improve and be good at the sport, this was my source of inspiration. Basketball is one of my many sources of happiness. Through this artwork, my intention was to send a message which is "Shoot for your dreams, although it would be hard.” This message was symbolized through me shooting a basketball and a flight of stairs in-front of me.Dhruv
Golfaxe
My picture was me holding an axe which was supposed to act as a golf stick and the golf ball was a tree which means that the golf stick has to hit the tree. This indirectly appeals to deforestation. This was intended to give a message on deforestation.Chatherine
My Dream
My surrealism is about how we can reach our dreams. In my picture there are 2 animals that I really want to ride. If I see 2 of the animals it can make me happy. My message in this surrealism is you can reach your dream if you work hard for it.Thomas
Darkest Dreamer
Meaning in my artwork is about racism. Reason I chose racism, because I had experienced unfairness. Humans are the same and it doesn’t matter with the skin colour. Humans should be fair and we can’t compare only watching or looking at their skin colour.Stanis
Bored
The pandemic is quite a problem recently so in my art work I did it to give people ideas of things to do at home while the pandemic is going on. I did this by showing pictures and other things that represent it. I first found this idea because the things that I do now at home while in this pandemic are basically the same each day so I wanted to discover things that I haven’t done.Fred
Don’t Give Up
My message is ‘Don’t give up’ and I get inspired about Faker, and Haksal, who is a pro-gamer. Faker and Haksal were very interested in the game, so their dream job was a pro gamer. But their parents didn’t accept them to be a pro gamer. But they didn't give up and kept trying to grow their game skill. And finally they come to be a pro gamer and be famous. That is reason I get inspired for them.Nicholas
