The Wolf
This painting was originally inspired by the story of Red Little Riding Hood and the artwork of Gabriele Munter. The main purpose was to work with more values and colors. This artwork was created. The artwork shows the story of Red Little Riding Hood from a different perspective. It can be seen from the picture itself that the face was divided into two roles: the girl and the wolf. The hair on the girl’s side is fading and it shows the feeling of fear she had when she found out her grandma was dead. On the other side, the wolf had very strong black hair, showing the power he has over them.
Cup on Up
The painting was inspired by Dale Hickey and Samuel Van Hoogsraeten. This painting's main point was its simplicity and minimalistic style that was inspired by Hickey’s Cup Painting series. The detail and shape of the cup drawn inspires me to draw my favourite cup. The arrangement of this still life painting was inspired by Samuel’s Letter Board painting that gives off a lot of nostalgic feels, shown from the objects drawn there. Most of the objects used in this painting were my own things, that is very memorable, have its own story and it still connects to the old -style feel.
Medusa
This sculpture gives the spotlights to Medusa in preference to the greek mythology. The sculpture represents two sides of stories involving the figure of Medusa and Perseus. The head was inspired by Canova’s Perseus With The Head of Medusa sculpture as well as color and design of the well was inspired by the artwork of Jones, The Baleful Head. Blood on Medusa's eyes depicts her pain and suffering after she was turned into a monster by Athena. The snakes behind Medusa’s head show her power. The two pillars represent her majesty when she was still alive.
Danaides
This Sculpture original idea came from the story of the Danaides, the fifty women who committed crime, killing all of their husbands on the night of their wedding and got punished to keep drawing water from the well and pour it to an empty vessel in which the water never actually got filled in. This sculpture is also inspired by the style of Antonio Canova’s sculpture, Cupid and Psyche showing minimalism on it. Both of the inspirations are love themed but the ending of the story is the opposite. The pillars represent their punishment to stay, the jar shows commitment, and the wings shows hope that the curse might end.
Board Exceptions
This artwork conveys the meaning of growing old and missing all our childhood hobbies. As time go by we can’t go back to the past and be with our favourite things” The items like the snake ladder, puzzles, cubes and the media colour pencil are board games are a resemblance of my childhood. They are all important component of my life that I want to express to the viewers in order to get a peek of my childhood life. As you see, the opposite gender that is in the drawing is an inspiration taken from the “Only Exception” music video by Paramore, it was such a nostalgic moment for me that I had to put it in.
Unpleasant Torture Pt 1
This is a sculpture that is carved out of a wax cube which I have moulded out of small wax cubes to resemble my theme bizarre. I chose wax as my media because I want my sculpture to start well and end well suggesting that this sculpture won’t end up being like other sculpture; rusted and broken. Most importantly, I wanted to address beauty to all gender as a concern to the world, as many have felt abashed and this first head resembles the past self of yourself being isolated and scared. As she widens her mouth, a new ‘you’ emerge just like a snake shedding its skin.
Pop Accessories
This work is a resemblance to pop art and realism using acrylic in order to show that the mismatching elements can be brought to life. The pop-art background was deeply inspired by the works of Roy Lichtenstein to appreciate the retro style of all trend. I chose fruits also to embraces the nature of its kind without any artificial adding to it, in relation to the accessories, it shows the urban setting of how equipments are made in factories rather than naturally developing it. Overall, the main intention is to bring old habits to life and imply them in our daily live basis.
Unisize
This collage of mix media as you see here is my imagination towards University. When I was in my elementary days, I dreamt to be just like High School Musical. “Tall, handsome boys and tall, pretty girls.” Well, it didn’t turn out what I expected. Here I am reimagining my fantasy again but this time in terms of University. I chose this media as I am stuck in this dreadful quarantine days due to the coronavirus leading myself to use materials that I could find around my house.
Family
The portrait depicts and conveys the character of warmth and coldness in the diptych of my parents. The portrait conveys the bright and confident character from my mother by using warm colors and a calm and intelligent character from my father by using cold colors. Inspired by Kehinde Wiley, I decided to use vibrant colors with a floral background that symbolizes the personality traits of both my parents. Using Picasso’s idea from the blue period I used warm colors on the two figures. Having the two portraits look at each other it reflects the relationship between them.
Blue Corona
The digital painting depicts and conveys the weak-minded emotions of the coronavirus by using monochrome colors of blue. This digital painting the mask conveys the meaning of security and protection through using light colors. The two hands represent the power and corrupted strength that is being manipulated by the current pandemic of the coronavirus (COVID 19). The dark contrast in shadows emphasizes the harm and corruption of the coronavirus.
Self in World
A sculpture depicts and conveys the moment of loneliness and anxiety in a foreign country as a Korean child living in Indonesia. The sculpture conveys the meaning of claustrophobia by encompassing flowers - inspired by Jess Riva Cooper - to trap ourselves of the clashing cultures painting local flowers in Korea and Indonesia with acrylics and clay. The two babies are reflected as me and my twin sister as one hand is put on the chest to depict hardship as they hold hands to support one another through their journey.
Childhood
A painting depicts and conveys childhood treasures of fondness and happiness. The still-life painting conveys the meaning of adventure by composing the objects in different angles and positions. The two objects of the red car and the broken recorder hold a memorable scene as the glass jars and cups help to signify reflections upon my childhood life. The red car especially was one of the objects that were very important as it was one of the things that I dreamed of doing.
Inconspicuous
In this self-portrait, it depicts a young woman clenching her hands to her chest that has a hollow space containing a giant centipede. The centipede portrays the feeling of guilt from past mistakes. The bright blue eyes staring outside from the window indicates an ominous sensation, giving a sense of being monitored and control. It also depicts how the woman is inconspicuous. The woman in this piece that has her mouth shut with a tape gives a connotation of fear, lies, and burden. The flowing black tears give the notion of surrender and realization. The black tears also evoke a feeling of dreariness in the painting. I was deeply inspired by a surrealist photographer named Luciana Rodriguez by how she utilized her photographs to depict emotions that cannot be expressed through words itself.
Sea of Abyss
In this sculpture, it depicts a motion of a female figure drifting away in a dark aquatic abyss. The focal point of this sculpture is the expression portrayed on the female’s face which shows emotions of tranquility, however, it only displays the surface of what the female deeply feels. I was deeply inspired by Luo Li Rong’s surreal sculptures, the way how she utilized motion in her sculptures. This piece plays with notions of apathy, repentance, and fear.
Consciousness
In this self-portrait, it depicts an image of two selves merged into one hugging one another. The overall painting was inspired by Pablo Picasso’s Blue Period. The blue and blue-green background portrays an isolated space within one’s mind. The two selves depict the emotion of sorrow from the affliction of deceptions created by others. The triangles that are pointed towards the two selves represent the overwhelming negativity that surrounds the two selves. The arms that are engulfing the two selves evokes a sense of protection and safety, almost as if it is encasing the two selves in sheltering themselves from the pointed triangles.
Nostalgia
In this still-life painting, it depicts an arrangement of several objects. It consists of a green glass bottle, a small glass bottle and a book designed with Chinese characters and flower embroideries patterns. These three objects portray and symbolize the sorrow memories of my past childhood, it felt almost bitter-sweet. The green glass bottle and the small bottle symbolizes a nostalgic memory of me and my family during special occasions. The thin notebook represents the struggles of learning a foreign language which was Chinese. This was given to me as a prize for the best Chinese handwriting, however, it also represents the feeling of pressure and anxiety.
Rebirth
This painting adopts the style of Chinese painting. The character is selected from ancient Chinese mythology, which is the god of fire. However, I did not fully refer to that mythical image, I created this character based on my expression, I portrayed this character as a woman's image. Through the red colored makeup and red hair, it shows the identity of this character. Choosing this image also allows me to use many red color to highlight the character's enthusiasm and bravery. The dragon in the background is also one of the classic Chinese elements, and it can also highlight the character's status and strength. The blue background and the red character formed a contrast, creating a visual contrast, and can also highlight the characters' ability to overcome difficulties and danger.
Kaleidoscope
In the kaleidoscope of life, we are constantly meeting and missing something or someone, and have nowhere to express the missing. The inspiration for this painting is from ancient Chinese sculptures. It depicts the image of a woman flying towards the sky. People always wanted to fly, because birds are always free to go wherever they want. I wanted to express these desires, so I chose the image of the phoenix Qingl Luan for this painting. Qing Luan’s work in mythology is to convey letters, and the letters carry the love and concerns between people. In order to integrate this image well, I use the image of the phoenix and this phoenix to appear as a human in the painting. People and phoenix dance in the moonlight above the sky, there is a mysterious and warm feeling, which means that the person you love will come in the next morning.
Connection
The painting contains three glass bottles containing different things. First of all, this makes the whole painting look more dreamy, which fits my theme ‘imagination’. Each bottle contains water, air, and flowers. These three items all symbolize life. Water is the source of life, roses represent enthusiasm and hope, and the vitality of plants is very tenacious, just like our motivation to live our life. The bottle filled with air is poured in the middle to highlight that even if we live in different places, we will always stand under the same sky and enjoy the same air while breathing. This bottle is like a bridge that shows the connections of all our lives.
Abyss
Friedrich Nietzsche once said “He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby becomes a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee.” The whole sculpture has two different sides, one side is covered with green grass and sunflower flowers, that is the hopes and beauty, and the other side is a muddy place with the broken mirrors, which represent the abyss and frustration. The two hands in the sculpture represent the abyss and redemption in one's heart, one hand reaches into the abyss, but the other hand stretches upwards, trying to catch hope.
